Spiritual Solutions to Everyday Problems: What is Prayer?

Q: Hey Heather! I love how you talk about prayer but I get really intimidated by it. I don’t really know how to do it or if the Universe is even listening to me when I do it. Help!
Awesome question! I love this one. let’s de-mystify prayer, shall we?
The image most of us get when we think of the word “prayer” is a little girl or boy kneeling at the foot of their bed with their hands together, eyes closed, asking some Dude up in the sky with a big white beard to make shit happen.
Most of us think that prayer is asking a Higher Power of some sort to do things for us. But prayer isn’t that at all. Prayer is soul chat with the Universe. It is a tool that we can use to connect and conversate with the Universe. It’s a conversation; a call; a thought; an offering; a way of surrendering yourself to a power greater than you who reallyknows what’s up.
People can become really intimidated by prayer because they think it has to have a certain format or they have to say certain things like “Dear God” and “Amen.” But that’s so not the case! Think about it. This energy force that we call Universe is INFINITE! That means it loves you always and forever, no matter what. Would something that loves you always and forever, no matter what, care what you say or how you say it? No way! It just wants to talk to you, love you, support you, and guide you.
Prayer is soul chat with the Universe. It’s that simple. You’re having a soul chat with your very best friend. Trust that if you talk or think a prayer, the Universe will hear you.
Prayer can be asking for guidance. Prayer can be asking for an energy of protection and support before a job interview. Prayer can be asking the Universe to help you be your fun, authentic self on a date. Prayer can be saying thank you to the Universe for all the things in your life that you are grateful for. Prayer can be saying thank you for all of the relationships and situations that have led you to this moment. It doesn’t really matter what you say…just that you get into a habit of being consistent with it. The more you do it, the more guidance you hear and the less you second-guess what the Universe is saying to you.
A Course in Miracles talks about “willingness” a lot, and that’s really all it takes when it comes to prayer. You just have to be willing to ask for guidance. You just have to be willing to thank the Universe. You just have to be willing to close your and eyes trust what you hear.
A great prayer to start is, “Universe, please enter my heart, where you already live, and show me where to go, what to do, and what to say. I surrender my day to your lead.”
