Soda and pancreatic cancer

A very interesting and informative article was just published in the American Association for Cancer Research (Cancer EpidemiologyBiomarkers & Prevention) linking soft drinksonly 2 per week (!) to pancreatic canceramong the most fatal forms of cancer.



From the article:


Carcinoma of the pancreas is a serious medical and public health problem because of the late presentation of symptomshigh metastatic potentialinadequate therapeutic choicesand lack of primary prevention strategy. Pancreatic cancer is among the most rapidly fatal cancers in adultswith a 5-year survival rate of <5%



The hypothesized mechanism linking type 2 diabetes mellitus or abnormal glucose metabolism to pancreatic cancer involves insulin. Chronically elevated glucose concentrations are directly associated with reduced insulin sensitivity. Hyperinsulinemiaa result of insulinin sensitivityhas been shown to increase local circulation and cell division (i.e. cancer) within the pancreas.

^^This means very high levels of glucose cause one to become insensitive to insulinso sugar can not be efficiently transported into cells from the blood. The pancreatic cells to compensate increase cell division (this is the definition of cancer) to produce more insulinetc. etc.


Soft drinks are the leading sources of added sugar in the U.S. diet


There was no association between consumption of juice and risk of pancreatic cancer



No time better than the present to give up soda or "pop" as many of you call it ;-)
