Slow Down Baby

Posted Aug 10 2011 2:40pm

Hello lovelies! Hope you are all having a fabulous day so far :) .

It is gorgeous outside here today. The high is only supposed to be 80 degrees and the humidity feels nonexistent.. it actually feels almost breezy outside since we’ve been in the 90s with insane humidity. A day like today means that I can straighten my hair with ease :) . Love it!

Last night I went out for some fro-yo. I didn’t snap a picture, but let me describe it to you I had chocolate brownie and confetti cake fro-yo and topped it with reese’s peanut butter cups, graham cracker crust crumbs, and chocolate chips. Oh yea :)

Sadly though, I finished the whole thing in about 5 minutes or less. Yea…I ate it that fast!

You see, I tend to eat all of my food way. too. fast.

I’ve been this way for as long as I can remember. Most of the time I’m the first person to finish my food when I’m eating with others. However, I also don’t eat so fast that I look like I’m inhaling it. That would be a frightening sight.

For years my family has been telling me that I need to slow down when I’m eating a meal. My general response has been “Yea, yea, I know…I will.” Um…hasn’t happened. I think several things have a role in why I eat fast-

  • My lunch periods in elementary school were short enough already, but once you were finished you were allowed to go to recess- who wouldn’t want to eat fast so they could get in more play-time?
  • In middle school and high school, lunches were short too. Plus, if you bought your food- the line was so long that you had about 10 minutes once you made it through.
  • I’ve always had an on the go schedule. Go to school, come home, change, go to dance practice, eat a quick dinner, go back to dance, go to cheerleading, etc. Eating a slow meal was not a priority, my activities were.
  • After high school and getting over my disordered eating habits, I think I ate fast because I just plain wanted food in my stomach. And dammit, I wanted it right then and there. No more waiting.
  • And now, I think I’ve just been conditioned to eat fast. I don’t really know any other way. It’s a natural process that I don’t even think about.

Now though, I am starting to really think about it. When my fro-yo was gone last night I was sad. I felt like I wanted more…but did I really? In reality I don’t think I actually wanted more, I’m pretty sure I just didn’t fully enjoy and appreciate the deliciousness that entered my mouth. In fact, I don’t think a lot of my meals satisfy me the way they should because I don’t try to savor each and every bite. I mean yea everything I eat tastes great and I love it, but I generally feel let down after a meal and sad that I have to wait a while until the next one. Perhaps that’s why my thoughts are often consumed with food.

I think that if I took the time to enjoy each bite and taste all of the wonderful flavors I wouldn’t feel that way. Not only would my hunger be satisfied at the end of a meal, but so would my mind.

So today I googled “how to eat slowly”. Totally innovative search huh? ;) These are some of the things I came up with that I can totally do if I put my mind to it!

  • Every time you take a bite, put your fork down immediately. The more we hold our fork in our hands, the more we are tempted to keep shoveling it in.
  • Chew your food as much as you can. Chew thoroughly and pay attention to texture, taste and substance.
  • Drink water in between bites.
  • Swallow what is in your mouth before preparing the next bite. Many people are busy loading up their utensils while their mouth teeth are still chomping away.
  • When it’s time to eat, do nothing but eat. Devote your full attention to the meal. Make it a habit to turn off the television and silence you cell phone. If you’re distracted by other activities, you may not notice how fast — or how much — you are eating.

I’m determined to slow down, baby! I think that food should be enjoyed- and that’s exactly what I hope to do more of :)

Do you eat fast or slow?

Do you have any “tips” on how to slow down when you eat and enjoy every bite?
