Skinny Travels: Eating Healthy at Greenman Juice Bar & Bistro in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Posted Aug 14 2011 9:17am

More Skinny Traveling!  Greenman Juice Bar & Bistro is my favorite go-to place in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware to have an innovative and healthy meal at the beach.  Located just off the boardwalk, it is open for breakfast and lunch only.  I typically go for both!  Vegetarians will have a field day at this place, but carnivores are equally happy with its local meats.

Skinny Pick for Breakfast:  Greenman Tofu Scramble

  • Hash of spiced cooked Tofu, Organic Fresh Vegetables, and Red Potatoes in a Whole-Wheat Wrap.
  • Side of Fresh Chopped Salsa
  • Side of Fruit

Another option is to choose the whole-grain Wheatberry toast as a side instead of the wrap.  There is a whole-wheat bagel option, but it’s a bit big.  With the
potatoes included in the hash, don’t overdo it on carbs before hitting the beach!

Skinny Pick Breakfast Runner-Up:  Gourmet Breakfast Sandwich

  • Free-Range Organic eggs with Melted Swiss on whole-grain Wheatberry Toast
  • Side of Fruit

Another option is the Grilled Flatbread or Ciabatta Bread.  Stick to the whole-grain Wheatberry or the thinner Flatbread, or just eat half of the huge portion that comes with the bigger Ciabatta Bread.

What’s for lunch?

Skinny Pick for Lunch:  The Superbird

  • Organic Turkey Breast, Avocado, Swiss Cheese, Cucumbers, Lettuce and Tomato
  • Order with Dijon mustard, not mayo.
  • Side of root chips

Greenman’s Smoked Turkey Breast is slow roasted, certified organic, free of antibiotics, nitrites and nitrates.  I stay away from deli meat in sandwiches at
restaurants and at the grocery store, but this one is decent.  It’s still higher in sodium since it’s processed, not hand-sliced from an in-house cooked turkey, so stay away from the salt shaker.  Skip the chips, or in my case, donate it to your dining companion.   It’s just from a bag, so it’s not worth it.

Try it on whole-grain Wheatberry Bread, too.  I was just in a Skinny wrap kind of mood today, so I chose the whole-wheat wrap at both breakfast and lunch.

Skinny Pick Lunch Runner Up:  Soba Noodle Salad

  • Chilled Japanese Buckwheat Noodles and Organic Vegetables served on a bed of Lettuce.
  • Ask for the Ginger-Soy dressing on the side and go light with it.
  • Add Grilled Tofu or Grilled Chicken for protein to this refreshing salad.

All salads at Greenman are excellent selections if you maintain control over the salad dressing.  That Skinny rule applies anywhere!

Greenman is also known for its all-natural fruit and power smoothies.  I rarely drink my calories for a meal, but if it works for you, try it with a side salad.  Remember that smoothie calories add up fast, so consider it at least half of your meal, not an “extra”.

Back to the real world this afternoon, as I travel home Skinny style — refreshed and feeling healthy, NOT in need of a detox.  Vacations are for the soul, not for the scale, so redefine how you relax and enjoy traveling.  Nurture yourself and your body, while trying the best of the local cuisines.

Greenman is located at 12 Wilmington Avenue in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and is open in-season Thursdays through Mondays from 8am to 4pm.  Closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
