Six Ways to Save on Business Costs This Spring

Posted Mar 30 2011 5:12pm

Like every household, businesses need to find ways of economizing on their day-to-day expenses. Whether it’s looking for cheap electricity suppliers or just getting the best deal on stationery, here is a quick guide on how to bring down your overheads.

Save on energy bills
You’ve done it for your home bills, so now do it for your business. There are a plethora of websites out there to help you compare prices to find the best energy supplier but you might also get the best price by going direct to the supplier.

Bring down your stationery bill
Stop wasting money with an expensive stationer that’s pouring your money down the drain. Stationary is usually a commodity so ask around and find the cheapest price.

Print more and photocopy less
Don’t photocopy when it’s cheaper to print. It’s easy to get in the habit of photocopying if it seems easier, but printing things like forms and invoice sheets will be a cost that builds up over time, affecting your bottom line.

Do you really need to deliver overnight?
The answer, in most cases, is no. So kick that expensive overnight habit and choose to deliver the next afternoon or use a service that delivers in a couple of a few days. Even better, why not try to email things or upload them online instead? Got a big 20mb file: use a cloud storage system. Need to send an invoice and want it to be processed immediately? Try to get your clients to accept emailing invoicing.

Shop for your insurance every year
You should shop for insurance annually to make sure you’re getting the best deal. Sometimes companies will offer deals to try to lure you in but then they’ll increase their rates the next year. They’re betting you’ll stick around for a few years before you decide to switch again. And, if you phone up to cancel, they can always offer you a hot deal. Be proactive and don’t get burned. When you’re buying insurance, though, always remember that getting lesser insurance is not the same as saving money. In fact, that can be way more expensive in the long run.

Move your business to the home
A solution for many small businesses. With computer and printing technology ever improving, it’s never been easier to work from home. A small business with only a few employees can often function perfectly well with work being done from the respective homes of its staff. The cost savings on rent and utilities are massive!
