Shopping at Whole Foods

Even though my doctor told me to start chilling and relaxing at home (more on that in a big pregnancy update to come next week), I got myself up and relatively pulled together early this morning.


I planned to take a trip to the Whole Foods that recently opened up here in Charlotte.

The store has been a zoo ever since it opened, and I knew that, unless I was in the mood to wrestle with some woman over a Larabar, I’d have to beat the crowds.

I’ve been to Whole Foods a number of times, but this was my first time at the one in Charlotte.  I must say, it is a beautiful store.


For a health-conscious person such as myself, it was so much fun to walk around and explore.  If I had allowed myself to wander over to the beauty section, I probably could have spent hours in there.

The store is ideal for anyone who is sensitive to dairy or gluten (especially that amazing ice cream aisle).

Sure I could print their coupons every week or take advantage of their specials, but in my opinion, it is just too expensive to do my main grocery shopping there.

And as far as produce goes, I’d rather buy local from the farmers market.

And as far as their meals and hot bar…

If I’m going to spend $14.99 on one entree, I’d rather do so on a date with my husband at a nice restaurant.


Even so, the store was definitely worth visiting, and I did manage to pick up a bunch of things- including Michael’s gluten-free beer.

(Side note: If you ever want to get lots of dirty looks from strangers, buy alcohol while sporting a huge pregnant belly.  Even after explaining that it isn’t for me, I never quite get the feeling that anyone believes me.  Always a joy.)

My haul included: chocolate Almond Breeze, Yogi Tahitian vanilla hazelnut tea, pineapple chunks, Atlantic salmon, Earth Balance, Greek yogurt, Almond Dream yogurt, O.N.E. coconut water, strawberry popsicles, brown rice flour, gluten-free macaroni & cheese, almond milk, and rice milk.

Overall, my main reasons to visit Whole Foods are to:

  • Just walk around and explore
  • Pick up hard-to-find items, such as certain types of flour
  • Shop the amazing bulk bin section
  • Have access to a larger variety of dairy-free, gluten-free, or vegan items
  • Attend the classes or special events (I’d love to make it to some cooking classes one of these days!)
