So before we get into the week 14 update can I first ask how I could possibly get a few more hours in the day? I mean it’s 8:15 and this is the 1st time all day I’ve been able to relax. Somehow our mornings seems to be getting more hectic…maybe it’s because 2 eggs on a toasted english muffin with laughing cow light swiss cheese is the only thing I can stomach which takes way more effort than my normal smoothie or even eggs with avocado. Plus lunches take longer to pack because I’m trying to get all my various snacks packed up (this week it’s strawberries, orange peppers, hummus, 2 string cheese sticks, a kind bar, rice cakes, almond butter and some crackers to go along with my PB & J sammy and the saltines and almonds that I have at my desk). So far I’ve been going through everything but the rice cakes/almond butter.
But back to my lack of hours in the day – besides the hectic morning I get a full day of work in (of which 3 hours were spent forecasting units shipped for my entire business down to the style level for the entire fiscal year…fun…not). I managed to get 45 min of light cardio (elliptical + bike) in at the gym at lunchtime. We swung by the condo then got home, I walked the dog, made dinner (sun-dried tomato penne pasta with chicken, goat cheese and spinach), cleaned up dinner and then am here writing to you people while icing my knee (which somehow started hurting on the elliptical today).
Ok, rant over. Back to your regularly scheduled program.
This week the baby is the size of a lemon. His/her week’s big developments: this baby can now squint, frown, grimace, pee, and possibly suck its thumb! Thanks to brain impulses, his/her facial muscles are getting a workout as his/her tiny features form one expression after another. His/her kidneys are producing urine, which he/she releases into the amniotic fluid around him/her a process they’ll keep up until birth. H/she can grasp, too, and may even sucking his/her thumb. By the end of this week, his/her arms will have grown to a length that’s in proportion to the rest of his/her body. (His/her legs still have some lengthening to do.) He/she’s starting to develop an ultra-fine, downy covering of hair, called lanugo, all over their body. Your baby’s liver starts making bile this week a sign that it’s doing its job right and his/her spleen starts helping in the production of red blood cells. Though you can’t feel his/her tiny punches and kicks yet, your little pugilist’s hands and feet (which now measure about 1/2 inch long) are more flexible and active.
What’s going on with me?
I’m finally starting to feel a little better. We went to Bend over the weekend (which will eventually get up here) and for the most part I was able to hang with the normal folks. I got a little tired after being at Brewfest for a couple of hours and had to sit down and on Sunday I could tell I’d done more than normal because everything felt like a big effort but overall I think I’m through the worst. So far this week I’ve only felt nauseous 3 times at work so that’s been a huge improvement. My boobs are also less sore and I’m not having to run to the bathroom all the time. Monday night I didn’t even have to get up to pee! However, I have been having some not so fun round ligament pain. Basically my uterus is stretching and you have these bands of ligaments that run up and down it and as they stretch out they hurt. Occasionally I get the really pinching/stabbing pain for a few seconds (which go away if I rest/lean into the pain) but more often I just have some tenderness all day long. Sounds like these bad boys could stick around for a while so I’ve been trying to do some cat/cow stretches since I read that’s suppose to help and I think they have been. Since I started those (and pilates!!) on Monday today was better. No new food cravings or likes. Most food still doesn’t sound good and I still can’t stand smoothies which is tough. This baby is seriously lacking green leafy veggies (well most veggies if we’re being honest) and I need to find a way to get them into my belly. Any tips would be much appreciated. Oh and I’m still struggling with drinking water. It just doesn’t sound good.
I went back to pilates on Monday!! Best day ever. It has been around 16 weeks since I’ve been (1st trimester plus time we were gone on vacation) and I can’t tell you how amazing it was to be back on the reformer. I don’t need to use the special pregnancy chair yet but I can’t do anything on my stomach so my teacher was great about giving me some modifications. I also didn’t feel comfortable doing short spine (legs up and over your head). Something about basically folding my baby in half felt weird… I’m also looking forward to one of our other pilates teachers to getting back from vacation. I don’t go to her normally but she trained Kara Goucher when she was preggo so I feel like she must have great tips.
I feel like that’s about it for now. I am definitely showing which sometimes makes it tough not to fall into the comparison trap because basically any former or current preggo person I’ve talked to said they were not or just barely showing at this point. But I do love having a little bump :) Oh and my jeans officially do not fit. I mean, I can make them button but I think I would die if I had to walk around like that. And I ordered my 1st official maternity clothes (besides a white tank top from Target but I feel like that doesn’t count). 3 dresses from Old Navy. They’ll be here next week so we’ll see how they work. I also found out I have to go to Austin for a 2 day offsite (over my anniversary!!! I am not excited) so I’m hoping they work for that.
Oh and I think we can safely say I gained a total of 6-8 pounds this 1st trimester. My weight is a little higher than it was pre-Bend and I’d like to think it’s some bloating from pizza but tomorrow will be the real test. I’ll update this after I weigh in.
Ok, that’s it. I’m tired now and off to watch something on HGTV. Hope you all are having great weeks so far.
