Running Shoes Trials and Tribulations

Posted Dec 16 2012 9:05pm

This morning after eating a bowl of pumpkin oats with almond butter and a tiny bit of brown sugar

I put on my new pro compression low trainers and laced up my new running shoes for an easy 4 miler around the neighborhood.

I was a bit apprehensive because I was going back to running in a more stable shoe.   You see ever since I injured my back and psoas muscle I have been running in minimalist shoes.

At first I was a Nike Free lover.  I have at least 3 pairs at all times and I just loved them.

I do think in conjunction with reading Chi Running, working with a trainer and using these shoes I was able to transform my form and running overall.  But as I put on more miles, I realized my feet started to hurt.  I decided I may need a “tougher” shoe and switched to Saucony but stayed with the minimalist concept.

I had these  and these .  Pretty but not functional for me.

But my foot problems continued to get worse.  You see I have VERY narrow, flat and long feet.  My arch was really starting to ache and I realized I was battling beginning stage of plantar fasciitis.

Last week I finally bit the bullet and went back to the running store and shared my issues with them.  They suggested my current shoe.  And they got me in a narrow which it wonderful.

Today I gave the shoes a go.  Of course they felt a bit heavier and “clunkier”  than I was used to but I am happy to report I had no arch pain.

Some other things I have been doing is stretching my feet, using a warming lotion, and wearing flats more often at work.

I am hopeful and feeling good about these new shoes!
