Music is everything when I work out. Seriously. If my ipod battery dies, I melt. Actually, I act like the tin man on The Wiz "A Teeny...Teeny" When I lose steam, I turn on a power song that has African drum beats and I'm out! zoooooooooom.
You can't fail with music, coupled with a Nike+, a little device that you plug into your iPod that acts like a personal trainer. It helps you set goals and coaches you along the way. "You have 400 meters to go!" Celebrities congratulate you "Hi this is Tiger Woods, congratulations on running your fastest mile ever!
I also recommend buying De La Soul's new audio workout. It's called "Are You In? Nike+ Original Run". You can buy it on I-Tunes. You don't need a Nike+, it is completely self contained. You can just play it on your ipod. It starts with a smooth little joint from De La and Raheem DeVaughn called "Mornin' Rise" When I run to the beat, I run about 3.5 miles in 40 minutes (pretty slow). If I walk to it, I do about 2.5 miles in 40 minutes. Either way, it's inspiring, positive, good hip hop.
My playlist changes all of the time. When I first started jogging, I needed to run to the beat to keep my self moving...it was rough going and I needed to summons the spirits of the ancestors with every beat. Now, it doesn't matter - as long as the song isn't too slow, I'm good.
I call this list, The People's Music (somehow, when you put the word "people's" in anything it makes it more revolutionary - we can thank the communists and Black Panthers for that!). This list is random. I change my playlist weekly. I will try to post a different one soon. Stay tuned for a gospel one. I love gospel music, and sometimes I need the Spirit to be with me on that trail.
