The New Zealand National Cycleway is a government initiated project opening up some of the most beautiful parts of New Zealand to cyclists. The Mountain to Sea Trail is one of these Great Rides and it will eventually be a 245km trail from Ohakune at the base of Mt Ruapehu all the way to the Tasman Sea at Whanganui. At the moment there are only two parts open, the Old Coach Rd and the Raetihi to Mangapurua Landing sections.
A couple of months ago I was lucky enough to ride most of these two tracks. It is going to be a spectacular ride once fully completed, but even right now it is stunning. I love the unrideable section from The Bridge to Nowhere to Pipiriki which means the only way out is via jetboat or kayak. (Because of bad weather I had to catch a jetboat both ways)
The remote, raw and rugged beauty of this area is hard to explain. Maybe my photos will help.
