I recently received an email from a reader of the Guide to Establishing a RHIO inviting me to meet with the Dutch delegation who will be attending HIMSS08. The reader provided me with an overview of their efforts for a nationwide EHR. I thought this was a wonderful example of a community establishing a health information exchange to match with the region's unique characteristics, so I've include the description below.
If you happen to run into any of these DutchRHIO pioneers at HIMSS this year, please take a moment to share your views on the current state off RHIO development in the USA, the different organizational, business and financing models.
In the Netherlands we count about 26 regions where Healthcare Providers collaborate on health ICT in order to improve quality en effectivenes of healthcare and reduce costs. We have a national organization on Healthcare IT (NICTIZ) working on the IT-infrastructure en standards for the nationwide EHR. The first two chapters of it, Electonic Medication Record en the Professional Summary of GP's, are piloted at this moment (one pilot in Amsterdam) and wil be rolled out in the Netherlands next two years.
Like Amsterdam there are about ten regions who have established a RHIO. In different forms of organization and different business models. In other regions initiatives on collaboration on ICT and RHIO establishing are undertaken. In a small coutry like the Netherlands we try to exchange actively experiences and ideas on best practices en business models with NICTIZ and regions.
