Resveratrol Companies are Everywhere: Buyer Beware!
Posted Sep 22 2008 5:37pm
It never ceases to amaze me the amount of junk products out there and the marketing glitz that accompanies them. So called "Resveratrol" companies are popping up faster then BlockBuster Video did in the 80's & 90's. This scares me! From the emails I receive, it scares many of you as well.
Recently I was sent a link from a very nice reader who asked me to take a look at a product he found "suspect". After my normal "friendly disclaimer" I gave him my two cents. First, the company was brand new and I couldn't find the business name registered any where. Next, the packaging was neat and clean but it did not mention the word resveratrol on it at all. It just claimed to have a blend of "Wine Extract" and some standard vitamins in it. I went to the companies website only to find something that was one page and very salesy for lack of a better word.
This experience made me think a refresher on choosing your supplements would be beneficial. These "DO's" and "DON'Ts can go for just about any supplement purchase you make, not just resveratrol.
The DO's
Do... make sure the ingredients are listed on the container. confirm independent testing has been done for purity purposes. make sure their testing results are publicly available. confirm they follow FDA guidelines for manufacturing purposes. make sure their is a person you can speak to at the company.
The DON'Ts
Don't... take someone's word about a product without having proof to back it up. believe the sales jargon printed on packaging or marketing materials. be afraid to contact the company directly and question them. put anything in your body without knowing where it came from. pay high prices for a product that isn't really what it says it is.
Additional Tricks:
Search the yellow pages for an address and phone number of the company.
Do a Dunn & Bradstreet search on the company name.
Your gut is usually right! If something doesn't seem right it probably isn't!

P.S. - I didn't forget about the Resveratrol Forums I mentioned starting. Unfortunately it is taking me some time to learn the programming and setup side of doing this. I hope to have that figured out in the next month or two.
