Recap: Try Something New Tuesday 32

‘Morning All!

My, my, my…. I’ve got some interesting new goods to tell you about today! This week marks 8 months of Try Something New Tuesdays – can you believe it?! Maybe I’ll have to have a TSNT birthday when #52 rolls around?! ;)

Here’s what went down yesterday:

1. Recipe of the Week: Mulligatawny Soup . When I was younger, my dad used to make a soup that I could never remember the name of. All I could remember was  that it was yellow – very yellow – and that it would often induce beads of sweat when consumed. According to good ol’ Wikipedia, mulligatawny means “pepper water” in Tamil, and mulligatawny soup is a curry-flavoured soup of Anglo-Indian origin. It is typically made with chicken, beef, or lamb meat, and sometimes contains rice to give it a thicker texture. I used chicken, and added some apples too because I love the taste of apples in curried dishes.

Mine was nowhere near as spicy as my dad’s version, which is good because I can’t say I enjoy breaking out in the sweats mid-meal. If that’s what you like, I suggest adding some spicy curry powder rather than regular – and lots of it.

2. Rishi Tea . This was something I found at Whole Foods last weekend. Rishi sells organic, fair trade teas in a ton of different varieties. The company is fairly young – it was founded in 1997 by a man whose goal was to bring the handcrafted teas he found in Asia back to consumers in North America. All tea sold by Rishi is hand-blended and hand-packaged, and the company is pretty darn serious about environmental sustainability! In addition to tea, the company also has tea pots, tea sets, serving accessories, natural fiber disposable tea filters, and gift sets.

The kind I bought was the Scarlet Organic Botanical Blend . The woman working at the coffee/tea bar at Whole Foods recommended it when I told her I was looking for a fruity tea, and it was certainly fruity indeed! The loose tea actually contains pieces of dried fruit (cherries, cranberries, blueberries, currants) so if you wanted to, you could eat those bits  (but I resisted).

I also bought some of the natural fiber disposable tea filters because I didn’t have any of my own. These are quite sizable tea bags!! I’m not normally one to re-use regular tea bags, but a serving of the Scarlet tea in one of these babies lasted 3 cups! I like my tea fairly strong and even the 3rd cup still had a ton of flavour. If you’re in the market for fancy shmancy tea, I’d recommend Rishi!

3. Nature’s Path Ancient Grains Granola. This package arrived at my doorstep last week. It has taken willpower of all kinds to postpone opening it until yesterday because I’ve been reading a ton of other blog posts about how flippin’ brilliant this granola is!

One of my favourite cereal brands, Nature’s Path, recently launched a new Kirkland Signature and Nature’s Path Ancient Grains Granola with Almonds cereal. Nature’s Path partnered with Kirkland Signature (yep, the brand you buy at Costco!) for this product, and like all things at Costco, it comes in a nice bigggggg box!

The granola contains 5 ancient grains (meaning whole grains eaten by people of ancient civilizations that are really, really good for us). These are:

-Spelt: Considered to be of prehistoric origin, spelt is an early form of wheat that contains notable amounts of iron, amino acids and fiber.

-Kamut Khorasan Wheat: Buttery wheat believed to be of Egyptian origin and kept alive by peasant farmers in Egypt and the Middle East. Kamut contains higher levels of lipids, amino acids and vitamins than durum wheat.

-Amaranth: This grain was so important to the Aztecs that Cortez, in an effort to destroy the Aztec culture, declared that anyone growing amaranth crops be put to death. Thanks to some seeds that were smuggled into Asia, you can enjoy its lively, peppery taste and high quality protein.

-Quinoa: Originally cultivated by native people of the Peruvian and Bolivian highlands, quinoa is known as a complete protein, including all the essential amino acids that our bodies can’t make by themselves.

-Oats: Crushed grains of oats that have been rolled into flakes, these are an excellent source of iron, dietary fiber and thiamin. ( Source ).

Sounds tasty, right? Indeed it is! I enjoyed my first taste mixed into a lovely parfait of cinnamon-spiced Crispin apple and vanilla yogurt.

Granola isn’t always my first-choice cereal because even some of the healthiest ones I’ve tried are incredibly sweet for my taste. This one was perfect though, and the crunch factor was enormous! I loved the almond bits, and didn’t feel the need to mix it with a less-sweet cereal.

Now I couldn’t just keep all this goodness to myself, so I also brought some samples to my spin class to share with my participants this morning and it made for a very delicious post-cycle snack. Oh, and a note for my Sunday spinners – make sure you come to class this weekend because there *may* be some more samples. ;)

Unfortunately, I’m told that the product is not yet available at Canadian Costcos, but lets keep our fingers crossed that it will be eventually! If you’re in the US… I strongly suggest hooking yourself up with a few boxes of this ASAP!

4. Salba . Recently I received a 3-day supply of Salba to try, and yesterday was day 1. In case you haven’t heard of Salba before, it is an ancient grain seed that is believed to have been first used by the Aztecs. Because it is an oilseed, it contains high levels of essential fatty acids, including Omega 3 and 6 healthy fats.  In addition, it provides fiber, protein, essential amino acids and antioxidants.

Salba is grown in Peru, packaged raw, and is an all-natural, gluten-free, certified non-GMO, vegetarian food source. Phew! That’s a long list! It’s also a fairly impressive whole food when stacked up to the other things we eat:

One thing I wondered when I first heard about Salba is how it’s different from chia seeds and flax seed. There are lots of differences, so if you’re interested, check them out here .

Since Salba (which is a product of Ancient Naturals) claims to have a very subtle taste, it can be added to all sorts of different recipes. A couple of the entree recipes on the Salba website are for stir-fried dishes, so I figured that would be a good way to try it. (I’m already adding wheat grass juice and maca and flaxseed, among other things to my green smoothies and I don’t feel another ingredient is really necessary at this point!)

One serving of Salba is 1 1/2 tbsp, so I just poured one of the sachets into the stir fry when it was almost finished cooking. The proteins of choice were a mix of chicken breast and previously oven-baked teriyaki tofu.

The salba seeds reminded me a lot of sesame seeds that I’d usually use in a stir fry, but didn’t have the same flavour (obviously, because they’re not sesame seeds). At first I thought a whole sachet was an awful lot of seeds, but I liked the added crunch factor and like the product claims, the taste isn’t noticeable in this type of dish.

5. A Phytoberry Bar. In this Monday’s post , I mentioned that I’ve been using Phytoberry , a natural food supplement that provides a load of antioxidants and other goodies for the bod. In addition to the powder, I also found a Phytoberry protein bar .

Each one contains 15g protein and has over 1000mcg of concentrated fruit antioxidants with no artificial sweeteners or flavourings. The bar also comes in a VeggeGreens Vegan Protein variety. Thanks to the very generous employees at Whole Foods, I sampled one in the store and was pleasantly surprised! The taste isn’t at all like veggies, and it was actually quite pleasant. I didn’t want to cheat on “new-ness” though, so I held off on trying the Berry variety until yesterday. It looked like this:

Kinda looks like a Simply Bar , don’t you think? My usual protein bars (ie Luna, Simply Bars) tend to be chocolate or peanut butter flavoured, but the fruitiness of this bar was actually really pleasant. It was soft and chewy, and it didn’t have that stuck-in-your-teeth factor that some other protein bars do. Two thumbs up from me! :D
