Recap: Try Something New Tuesday 153

Posted Apr 17 2013 4:30am

Hello there!

How are you doing today? I don’t know about you, but I’ve felt a little out of sorts this week in light of the tragic events that happened at the Boston Marathon on Monday. I like to keep things pretty optimistic here on the blog, but can’t help but feel shivers run down my spine every time I think about it. I have several friends that were in Boston either as spectators or competitors, and thankfully to my knowledge, they’re all ok. While I’m angry and frustrated, I’m also amazed and so proud of the running community, full of strangers from around the world, that have come together to support those in need. I’ve heard some amazing stories about competitors literally finishing the race, then running to give blood for those that were injured. Things like that give me faith that there are far more good people than bad in this world, and make me more proud than ever to be a runner.

Ok, enough of that. Let’s get to our usual Wednesday morning chatter!

1. Recipe of the Week. I hope you’ve got some tortillas left over from last week’s  Cilantro Lime Shrimp Wraps , because you’re going to need them! You’ll also need some of these:

grapes

As kids, my sister and I used to play grape juice squirting games after dinner. Dessert often consisted of yogurt with grapes hidden underneath, which, to my mum’s credit, was a pretty healthy choice. My sister and I would fish out the grapes, lick the yogurt off of them, then attempt to bite them ever so strategically in a way that made the juice shoot across the table at each other. Small things please small minds, I suppose.

As much as I love fruit, I don’t often buy grapes. I have no idea why – maybe it’s because I have no one to squirt any more?  Regardless, you’ll want to pick up a bunch, as well as these ingredients:

I’ve been all about wraps lately, and this week’s recipe, Sonoma Chicken Salad Wraps , is one of my favourite recent creations. I used to be of the mind that savoury salads were no place for fruit, but trust me on this one.

A few of you have been asking me what type of wraps I use, and as much as I adore sprouted grain Ezekiel tortillas, they’re not always the most flexible. Lately I’ve been buying the Smart & Delicious whole grain rye soft wraps from La Tortilla Factory , which are squeaky clean and weigh in at 90 calories, 3g fat, 13g fiber, 1g sugar, and 8g protein per 10″ wrap. They don’t have to be kept frozen like Ezekiel wraps do, but I’ve been storing mine in the freezer so they don’t go bad, and they still thaw out to be just as flexible as the day I bought them. Mine were purchased at Fiddleheads, but I think you’d be able to hunt them down in regular grocery stores too.

2. Teas from Steeped Tea. I feel a bit like I’ve cheated on David’s Tea for getting into this, but when I find a good thing, I’ve gotta share! As my previous Tuesday trials, Instagram photos, and tweets would suggest, I’m just a tad obsessed with tea. Everything from white to black, green to oolong, hot to iced, travel mugs to tea cups – you name it, I love it all! Recently one of my blog readers, Katie, emailed me to ask if I’d be interested in trying some of the tea from the company she represents, Steeped Tea .

In case you haven’t heard of them before, Steeped Tea is based here in Ontario, Canada, and Katie tells me that the business is just beginning to expand into the US this month. While the selection of tea offered is enormous, the creators believe that it’s not just about the tea, but also about who you share it with. Did you know that tea is the second-most consumed beverage in the world, after water? That’s a LOT of tea!

Knowing I’m a big tea snob enthusiast, Katie graciously offered to send me some samples from the Steeped Tea catalogue. Friends, this catalogue is to me now as the Sears catalogue was to me at Christmas when I was a kid! The selection is enormous, and you’re going to drool at these flavours! Here’s what Katie hooked me up with:

  • Clementine Biscotti (rooibos)
  • Vanilla Maple Cinnamon (black)
  • Toffee Crunch (rooibos)
  • Lemon Meringue (white)
  • Divine Goji Berry (green)
  • Coconut Calypso (white)

Where to start!!?! It took every ounce of willpower in me not to steep them all the night Katie dropped them off at my house, but I somehow managed to restrain myself and wait until yesterday to use my samples. I had the Coconut Calypso with breakfast (a little caffeine kick is always nice in the morning!), followed by the Toffee Crunch mid-afternoon, and a cup of Clementine Biscotti after dinner. It was a very tea-filled day! My favourite of them all was Toffee Crunch, which I got an impressive 4 steeps out of! If you’re the type that always gets a hankering for something sweet after dinner, I think the Clementine Biscotti or Toffee Crunch would do the trick (calorie and sugar-free!) Coconut calypso was a little underwhelming (not as coconutty as I expected) but not bad either.

In addition to amazing flavours, a great thing about Steeped Tea is that the company’s ingredients are very, very clean. Not a single one I tried contains any artificial flavouring, which is important for clean eaters!

I can definitely see myself making a big order from Katie, and on my next list, I’ll be going for Tart Granny Green Apple, Caribbean Daiquiri, Vanilla Cupcake, Creme Caramello, and the Organic Ginger Peach. Hmm… maybe I need to prioritize? ;)

If you’d like to try some of these for yourself, check out Katie’s Facebook PageShe’s offering a 10% discount to Eat Spin Run Repeat readers, so if you’re interested, be sure to use this link to place your order so the discount can be applied. (Note: This is not an affiliate link – I do not receive any revenue from orders placed.)

Alright, that’ all I’ve got for ya today! Before you head off, tell me…

  • If you’re a tea drinker, what type do you tend to go for most often? I tend to either pick decadent ones (think toffee, nuts, vanilla, caramel) or really fruity ones (lime, coconut, banana, mango, pineapple etc). When the warm weather hits, I’ll be all about the steeped iced tea!
  • Do you have a favourite brand of wraps/tortillas? When I’m not using Ezekiel or La Tortilla factory wraps, I go for collard greens !

Lastly, if you still haven’t entered my  blog birthday giveaway be sure to get your entries in quick! The giveaway closes on Thursday night at midnight EST and I’ll announce them in Friday’s post!
