Recap: Try Something New Tuesday 116

Hello friends!

Happy humpday to ya! How was your week been so far? For all of you taking part in my  July No-Crunch Core Challenge , did you get your 3 sets in this morning? Even though the challenge is coming to a close, I’ve got another great one coming up for August. Stay tuned for more details on that this coming Friday!

OK, now it’s time to talk new things! I have SO much deliciousness to tell you about today, so let’s not waste any time. Hopping straight in…

1. Recipe of the Week: Continuing on my big stone fruit craze, this week’s recipe features super juicy and delicious Ontario peaches!

I love to pair peaches with ginger, and that’s exactly what happened to these ones. As a kid, I remember my dad would slather is burgers with various Indian chutneys that you couldn’t pay me to go near… at the time. I still like to keep my condiments simple, but for this dish, I created a quick little chutney of my own.

And what was it paired with, you ask? None other than my all-time favourite fish! Can I interest you in a little Salmon with Ginger Peach Chutney ?

Since salmon is a very rich and oily fish, I loved how the light peach flavour paired with it. I baked my salmon in the oven, but you could just as easily do it on the grill. Oh, and if you have extra chutney, don’t worry. I had some leftover and used it on a piece of toast, and it was just as good as the first time!

Moving right along…

My other new things this week came to me courtesy of Health Pack (also known as HPack), a new Ontario-based business that provides samples of health supplements , sports nutrition products, and general health products to its subscribers. Each month, a new selection of products is made from both well-known brands, and up-and-coming ones. I think it’s great because if there’s a product you’ve seen in stores (like a massive tub of expensive protein powder, for example), you can test it out in a Health Pack sample before you commit to the purchase. Jon at Health Pack was gracious enough to send me a few samples of products I’ve been curious about for a while, so that’s what I’ve got coming up next!

2. P28 High-Protein Bread. If you’re wondering whether this has anything to do with P90X, the answer is no. P28 bread is a product that I’ve been meaning to find and try out ever since I started seeing magazine ads for it. If you haven’t heard of P28 yet, the company makes amped-up breads and bagels that contain 100% whey protein isolate.

Each serving of bread (1 slice) contains 130 calories, 2g fiber, 3g sugar, and 14g protein. A few other quick features….

Here’s my favourite bit:

P28 Bread Crust

A nice oaty crust!! I was never one of those kids that refused to eat bread crusts, but I didn’t love eating them either. Now, I love any loaf with seeds and oats on the outside!

As far as ingredients go, this is what the label says:

Water, whole wheat flour, P28 blend (whey protein isolate, wheat protein isolate, wheat gluten, soybean oil), sugar. Contains 2% or less of: Corn starch, wheat starch molasses, yeast, oat groats, raisin juice concentrate, sunflower seeds, flaxseed, millet, cracked wheat, sea salt, cultured wheat starch, cultured sugar, vinegar, lactic acid, cinnamon, enzymes, guar gum, rebina (stevia extract).

But what about taste? In order to test my sample slices, I put together a lovey stacked sandwich full of sliced red onion, tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce, and some thinly sliced leftover chicken breast that I had sitting in the fridge. To moisten things up, I slathered a nice thick layer of my lovely Summer Fresh Cucumber Garlic Greek Yogurt Dip on the bread.

This was one sandwich I couldn’t wait to bite into!

I tasted a small bit of the bread on its own, and it has a somewhat chewier, elastic-y texture than regular whole wheat bread. I could definitely detect a slight taste difference, but when combined with the other layers of my sandwich (and my growling stomach) it was just like regular bread. In fact, I’d say it actually held up better because of that stretchy factor that it seems to have.

Even though I’m not sure I’d eat this on a regular basis, I think it makes a decent alternative for other protein-rich sandwich fixings. Given the choice, I’ll always pick whole food sources to get my protein (hence the chicken), but if you were traveling and didn’t have a place to keep your sandwiches cool, the protein from the whey would still help you to get your fix.

3. Chocolate flavoured Sun Warrior protein powder. My only previous experience with Sun Warrior was their vanilla protein, which I reviewed here . It was a little underwhelming, but many of you told me that the chocolate variety is a lot better. When Jon at Hpack told me that chocolate Sun Warrior was included in this month’s sample kit, I jumped at the chance to try it. Sun Warrior is one of  the squeaky-cleanest, raw, vegan-friendly protein powders out there, and it’s one that I really want to like. As you might have guessed, I added it to a green smoothie with the following goodies:

  • 1/2 large banana, chopped into pieces
  • 1 serving of Sunwarrior chocolate flavoured protein powder
  • 2 cups loosely packed greens (spinach and kale)
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 heaping teaspoon of raw cacao
  • 1 tsp maca root powder
  • 1/2 tsp guar gum for creaminess
  • lots of ice

This is my usual ‘test recipe’ for new protein powders, and I’m pleased to announce that this one passed the test! I’ll admit that the raw cacao helped to intensify the chocolate flavour, but I think I could have easily done without it and still enjoyed my smoothie. There was no chalky texture, and the taste was much more pleasant than the smoothie I made with the vanilla pouch. Win!

So now, I want to know…

  • Have you tried P28 before? What did you think?
  • When it comes to protein powders, are you loyal to one or do you switch it up every now and then? I’m a very loyal Promasil fan (made by Rivalus, sold at GNC in Canada), but I do like to experiment with other brands from time to time. Vega is another one of my favourites…. but it’s a little pricey!
