Kurt Cobain JournalsAfter my roommate showed me some excerpts that she had for a class that she’s taking, I immediately ordered Kurt Cobain Journals. I can’t say I’m surprised, but I’m completely blown away. It’s no secret that I have a particular fascination with fallen muses. Kurt has been on my mind a lot lately–and Nirvana has taken over my Spotify. Maybe I’m just feeling subversive because of the government shutdown. Or it could be that Nirvana is timeless and Kurt Cobain is a genius.

Reading the thoughts of such a tortured soul is oddly as beautiful as it is heartbreaking, and the lists, letters, doodles, lyrics, and musings in Journals offer an amazingly intimate portrait of Kurt’s life. He was a smart, funny, creative, incredibly talented, and unfortunately very sick guy. But I stand firmly in the belief that if someone has to go that early, then there really is no better legacy to leave than music. Music immortalizes like nothing else can.
