Race #18: Run to Home Base 9K

Posted Jul 21 2014 3:17pm

18 races down; 12 to go!

This past Saturday I ran the 5th Annual Red Sox Foundation and Massachusetts General Hospital Run to Home Base 9K in Boston. Back in February I signed up after seeing the presentation at New Balance, and after months of fundraising I was finally able to run in support of all the men and women who have fought in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The race started at 8AM but there was a ceremony an hour prior. There were several speakers including Tom Caron, Retired General Hammond, Mayor Marty Walsh, and a mother whose son was treated through the Home Base Program. I’ll say that tears were pretty much flowing during that time.

The race wasn’t certainly my best showing but I was able to run the majority of the route, only stopping at 2 of the water stops. The weather was warm but there was cloud cover. The race started on Yawkey Way and continued up the Mass Ave bridge and Memorial Drive before coming back over the Mass Ave bridge and then ending on the warning track at Fenway Park. The finish line was starting to get crowded but they did a good job of getting people to walk towards home plate. My mom took pictures so as soon as she sends them to me, I’ll update the post. Smile

Up next is the Yankee Homecoming 5K in Newburyport next Tuesday. Because of my weekend schedule I’ve had to rearrange my races a bit. But I should still be able to complete this challenge!

What’s the most interesting race you’ve ran?
