Quick fixes are not the solution for obesity

Posted Dec 03 2010 9:01pm

Have you seen this story yet: FDA Panel Recommends Lap Band Expansion ?

Once again, instead of admitting that the easy fixes created for our obesity-filled, fast food-fueled country is not the answer, we’re ignoring the real solution to the problem. Diet changes and exercising works. You don’t need to pay thousands of dollars or wait months and months for your insurance company to process your requests to get healthier.

You can start today! No knives, surgery, or anesthesia necessary. Instead, trash the processed junk, educate yourself on nutrition, learn to cook a few dishes, and move your body more. It’s that simple. Seriously, it is.

Simple is not the same thing as easy. Weight loss is not easy. It’s complicated by emotions, fears, body issues, and resources, or the lack thereof. It’s about making hard choices, but doing what you know is best for your body and will lead to a happier life. I will never believe that surgery is the answer—not for most people. A small group of people may need surgery to save their lives and lose the weight, but that group is pretty small and definitely does not contain 32 million Americans.

Bottom line is this: it all boils down to calories in < calories out. When you push aside all the gimmicks, the information overload from the media and companies wanting your money, and different programs out there, weight loss always comes down to eating less and moving more for most of us.

Opening quick-fix surgeries to more people is not the solution.
