Weeks 2 and 3 went off pretty well. During the last couple of years when I was sick and as I was getting back into training, I was lucky if I got in 50% of my scheduled workouts. I had a million excuses. Work, life, blah blah blah… But, over the last couple of months, I’ve gotten much better and in the last two weeks I only missed one workout per week (less than 10% of scheduled workouts).
The true turning point was a comment made by Ed on my last post about getting in morning workouts. He said “If the dream is big enough, you’ll do it.” So when I didn’t feel like getting a two-a-day in, I sat back and asked myself: “Do I want this? Will I regret slacking? If I don’t put my all in to training, am I going to be angry if I don’t hit my goal?” The answer was always a resounding yes. And I always got my butt into the pool (usually I struggle to get my butt to the pool during lunch or after work).
I guess that consistency is just like anything else, it gets easier with practice. It only took me about 5 seconds of hesitation yesterday to get my butt up off the coach and to the pool for a race simulation after my 60mile ride. Here’s to hoping it just gets easier.
And on to the recap:
Week 2 (July 23 – 29)
Total: 10hours, 42min
Swim: 1:34, 4500yds
Bike: 5:30, 100mi
Run: 2:58:40, 21.21mi
Workouts missed: 3200m Endurance Swim
Key Workouts: 10mi Long Run (last two miles: 7:47/6:58), 65mi Ride
Week 3 (July 30 – August 5)
Total: 9hours, 11minutes
Swim: 2:36, 8152 yards
Bike: 5:24, 101 miles
Run: 0:56, 6.3 miles (CRAP!)
Workouts Missed: 4X1mi on track, Long run cut short due to GI issues (going to finish that up tomorrow)
Key Workouts: 60 mi ride w/ middle hour at goal HIM pace (21.7), 2 swim workouts at HIM pace (also, highest swim volume since IM training)
Current Fear about Sub 5: I want to ride a 2:35. That’s 21.7mph. I’m for sure better at longer stuff on my bike as it takes me a bit to get into my rhythm, but I just get (relatively) stronger as the time goes on because I have one race speed whether I’m racing a sprint or a HIM (same with swimming…have me swim 200m or 1500m, it would all be the same pace). Also, I have ZERO faith that I can run a good half marathon off the bike.
Week 4 goals: Recovery week!
Get in all my training, which should be easy because my parttime job is over for now, there are no elections, and I only have 7.5hrs of training planned.
