Prelude to a wet night race...

Posted Oct 13 2012 4:40pm
So tonight is the much-anticipated Energizer Night Race here in Vancouver.  I think last year was it's first year and I couldn't do it because we were out of town.  It turned out to be a horribly cold, wet, windy night so in the end, I guess it wasn't so bad to miss it.

This year, the organizers moved it ahead by about a month and it fit in my schedule so I knew I was going to finally run it.  Yay.  I also got the cool opportunity to be part of the Energizer Running Influencer program and was asked to review a few of their headlights which was awesome.  What's more, is that we've been having the most amazing fall weather.  We're talking sit out in your bathing suits in October kind of weather which is not at all the usual for the West Coast.  I figured I had it made when it came to the weather for this year's Night Race...
This was just last weekend and now
I'm stuck in a downpour!
Then along came yesterday and this for a weekend forecast...

Whammo!  So much for our beautiful fall weather.  The temps aren't bad but look at all that rain!  Now don't get me wrong, I'm a Vancouver runner, I've got the gear and I am totally cool with running in the rain.  But, I didn't think I'd have to make the switch from summer run gear to rain gear just over night!  My brain isn't quite ready for that kind of change yet!

So here I am, super excited about tonight's Night Race but kinda dreading the weather.  All morning I've been digging around for and dusting off my fall running stuff...tights, jacket, gloves etc.  Haven't quite figured out what I'll wear, I don't want to overheat but I do want to stay warm.  I might even have a special something-somethin to wear that may involve copious amounts of rainbow tulle and (gasp!) flashing lights!
A little blurry but you can see the LEDs...
It was actually a purchase just to increase the value of my order and get free shipping (with the intent of returning it to my local store upon receipt) but it actually looks kind of neat now that I see it.  Haven't actually tried it on yet so it may get nixed.  I'm also still wrestling with "flashing lights - fun!" and "oh my god, I can't believe she's wearing that!" so we'll see.

One thing's for sure, a garbage bag will undoubtedly be part of my kit tonight.

In other news, I hosted a small Halloween themed get-together last night for our monthly girls night and decided to hit Pinterest for some appetizer ideas.  While they didn't quite turn out exactly like the pictures, I think they were all right...

Jiggly brain jello mold which looked
disgusting but actually tasted
delicious!
Spider web mexican layer dip complete
with black olive spiders
These are little "mummy" piggies in a blanket (they even have eyes)
Anyhow, fun night and now I have some new ideas for appies on the actual night of Halloween.  I also still have a whole lot of work ahead of me sewing an owl costume for my oldest son.  He's 3 and has been practising his "owl eyes" for weeks!

So wish me luck in all that rain out there tonight!  Wet or not, I know we'll have a good time and I'm totally looking forward to my "running date" with a friend from run club (complete with yummy pasta dinner afterwards).  It's kind of like killing two birds with one stone - I get a fun running night out with a friend tonight and the pasta dinner will be like carb-loading for tomorrow morning's long run with the Goofy group.  At least that's what I'm telling myself....
