These days there seems to be a term and/or label for everything regarding food choices. It started with vegetarian and vegan- now there’s so many prefixes and suffixes it’s hard to keep track. The other day, in a state of needing to “fit in,” I started doing research to see if there is an identifier for my eating habits.
Let’s start with what I do and do not eat. I do not eat red meat. I also do not eat any type of fish at all. On occasion, I will have chicken and turkey, but only if I don’t look at it. Weird, I know, but looking at it will cause me to get grossed out and lose my appetite. I have no problem eating chicken or turkey in the form of cold cuts where it’s sliced nice and thin, but a chicken breast, etc, mostly skeeves me.
My research came up with the term “pollotarian” or “polloatarian” meaning a person who only eats white meat (turkey and chicken, not pork). However, after reading through some forums, it seems many are upset with terms such as “pollotarian” or “pescatarian” etc.
Why the upset? Some feel that the suffix “arian” should only refer to someone who doesn’t eat meat at all. Curiously, I am teaching suffixes right now. “Arian” refers to a connection to or belief in. Not “non-meat eater.” So I find that a bit amusing, sorry if that offends anyone. Others argued that “Pollotarians” obviously care for the mistreatment of cows and pigs, but apparently not chickens and turkeys. OKKKK maybe some people need to stop singling out the reasons why some do not eat meat.
I stopped eating red meat in high school because I was learning about it in Food Science and it grossed me out. Simple as that. Since then, I’ve read many horror stories about the mistreatment of animals and yes, it solidifies my reasons. But it is not the reason. It’s just my personal food choice. And if I want to call myself a “Pollotarian” I really can’t see the problem with that!
Am I being completely unrealistic here? I’m open to your thoughts.
Do you have a certain “label” to classify what you eat?
