Spring in St. Louis means an explosion of craft beer events. We are certainly a city that loves their libations, but with the extensive wave of craft breweries in the last five years, St. Louis has become a mecca for anyone that wants to enjoy a cold, hand-crafted brew on a warm day.
One of the most recent beer festivals was brand new to the city for 2012. The concept behind Pigs and Pints originated from the boys at The Civil Life Brewing Company . In Civil Life’s short time open, they’ve made a huge amount of friends and happy customers in the community, so when they had an idea for a pig roast, a whole lot of those friends wanted to help!
Chris from Mac’s Local Buys (he organizes buys of locally raised and humanely treated animals; most recently, my first chicken buy came from him! More on that to come) obtained a few Red Wattle Pigs, and The Block Restaurant prepared them oh so deliciously for us patrons.
Companion even made a special bread for the occasion, using the American Pale Ale that had just been released that day! Sump Coffee brought their namesake for the early risers (the event started at 10 a.m.) and Local Harvest provided some bright and beautiful vegetables for the event. Look at this spread!
Pint Size Bakery , one of the newest sweet shops in the city, brought along a variety of bite-sized but full-of-flavor desserts. Oh, and I’m still dreaming about the salty caramel ice cream from Bailey’s Range!
Stickley and Canan provided music during the second half of the event ( Celia sang family friendly tunes during the first half – this event was definitely kid-friendly!)
We arrived around 11:30 and sat with friends. This in itself is special and it occurred to me many times throughout the day how happy I am that I’ve made friends in the time I’ve lived here.
We drank the newly released Civil Life American Pale Ale, 2nd Shift Hibiscus Wit, 4 Hands Divided Sky Rye, Schlafly Yakima Wheat, and a drink called the Rattler – beer mixed with orange or lemon San Pellegrino!
Lastly, if this tells you anything about those friends I’ve made since living here…we couldn’t let a tray of tasty, tasty pork skin to go to waste.
Congratulations to Civil Life for hosting and organizing such a fabulous event in celebration of the amazing local businesses, farms, and friends that do this work every day! Can’t wait until next year!
