Philly's Vendy Awards 2011

Posted Jul 11 2011 11:52am

Hello! I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend. Mine rocked and I actually feel motivated this sunny Monday. Maybe because I only have a 4-day week, as we’re heading to Florida for the weekend!

Friday night I crawled into bed around 9 PM to kick the headache I’d been fighting all week . But Saturday morning, I felt fabulous, and after a quick 5 mile run, Joe and I headed to Ocean City, NJ for a day at the beach. The weather was perfect.

We headed back into Philly around 3 to attend Philly’s 1st Annual Vendy Awards – where the best street food vendors compete to showcase their best sidewalk cuisine in Philly. The Vendy Awards are held in major cities throughout the country – and have finally come to Philly!

The festival was held in the Northern Liberties neighborhood of Philly, and a $45 ticket bought us all we could eat food, beer, and wine!

The vendors included Cucina Zapata (Thai/Mexican), Gigi and Big R Caribbean/American Soul, Guapos Tacos, King of Falafel, La Copine (Brunch), Magic Carpet Foods (Whole World Vegetarian), Sugar Philly (Desserts & Macarons), and  Sweet Box Cupcakes!

Judges included Mayor Nutter, Jen Carroll (from Top Chef!), Drew Lazor (Food Editor @ Philly City Paper), Lindsay Lidge (wife of Philly Brad Lidge), Brian McManus (Food Editor @ Philly Weekly), Mike Solomonov (Exec Chef at Zahav), and  Jamie Shanker (Philly’s edition of Midtown Lunch).

Although Gigi and Big R Caribbean/American Soul ended up winning, our favorite was the Chicken Satay Tacos from Guapos Tacos!

I was star struck when we saw Jen Carroll from Top Chef. Love her.

And Michael Nutter popped in to enjoy the festivities.

The only downside of the event was that the lines were SO LONG. Unfortunately we didn’t even get to sample the falafel because the line was ridiculous. (And I love me some falafel) Fortunately, they had plenty of beer and wine to keep us occupied.

Another bummer - Sweet Box ran out of cuppies by the time my sweet tooth kicked in!

All in all it was a fun event and we enjoyed hanging out in the sunshine with other Philly food lovers.

Still a little hungry, Joe and I headed out to Varga Bar for a few bites. It was fantastic. Def going back.

We had the Boston Bibb Lettuce Wraps with spiced Moroccan lamb – these were unreal.

And Kobe Beef Sliders!

So great. (Joe apologizes for taking a bite.)

Sunday morning, I enjoyed an excellent 8-mile run along the Schuylkill – despite all the food and drinks from the day before! No problem.

So much to do this week – but well-rested and motivated. Lots goin' on!!!

How was your weekend? Do you ever eat “off-the-truck”?
