Posted May 23 2011 6:08am

Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) is a disease which arises in the pelvic organs of a woman (i.e., uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and the cervix). All these organs are inter-related. If an infection strikes one of them, the whole system gets upset. A woman is said to have a Pelvic Inflammatory Disease when any one of her pelvic organs are afflicted.

Causes Of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

A Pelvic Inflammatory Disease can be caused when bacteria or germs infect the vagina and travel up and affect her pelvic organs. A Pelvic Inflammatory Disease can be caused by many different kinds of bacteria. The bacterial forms could cause a STD or Sexually Transmitted Disease normally causes a PID. For example, Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are duo such examples of this. When a woman’s vaginal area is infected, it takes few days or months for an infection to reach the pelvic organs.

It isn’t a pre-requisite that the woman should have a Sexually Transmitted Disease to get a PID. The bacteria in the vagina are both of good and dire forms. Sometimes the bad bacterial forms act up and cause a Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. It is not exactly sure how this happens.
