Every few days I like to check on the runDisney website to look up information about the half marathon I’m running this fall.
And each time I look at it, I notice the number of days (and hours, minutes, and seconds) until my first ever half marathon. As of today, there are 60 days until the race! I’m super excited.
With all this running, training, and time devoted to the race though, I want to give some more.
In June I began volunteering for The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, and am constantly impressed by the work they do. They’re really organized, and from what I saw the first day I volunteered there, I want to do more than volunteer – I want to help more people access the food they need for their families. [Heck, they even have an organic farm that provides local vegetables to people dealing with hunger.]
Here I am, a woman with the privilege to travel down to Florida, pay money to enter an race and go on vacation, and afterwards feast at Disney’s Food and Wine Festival, while 71% of people in my own community are food insecure. These people may not know where there next meal will come from, or don’t qualify for federal assistance. Just look at some of the local hunger facts . It’s unbelievable.
It’s an injustice, and while I can’t change the whole world, I at least want to contribute to make some change.
Which is why The Food Bank of Western MA is my nonprofit of choice for fundraising for my race.
My goal is to raise $250 by October 1st.
For each $1 donated to The Food Bank, they are able to provide $13 worth of food to households in need. Just $35 can provide a year’s worth of monthly groceries for an elder in our Brown Bag program, and $150 can buy six months of meals for a family of four. A donation goes a long way.
I have set up a fundraising page with First Giving. Donating through this website is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to support my fundraising efforts.
