I have never been good at this. Here in Canada our food guide says we are supposed to get 8-10 servings of fruit and vegetables in a day, so I’m even worse! When I started running I started to pay more attention and use the fruit/veggie guideline as a bit of a diet plan – if you eat all 8-10 servings in addition to your protein and grains, there’s no hunger left over for any junk food and voila! You lose weight!
Anyhow, HBBC has reminded me I should be paying more attention to my fruits and veggies in a day. I’m still not very good at it. A few other HBBC’ers have posted some great posts about ways to get more fruit/veg, but it still takes a very dedicated effort for me to get all 7 servings in.
Things I’m trying to do that help reach the goal:
Extra scoop of fruit in my breakfast smoothie
A banana or apple with breakfast or morning snack
Beets! Yum! I love beets and can easily eat 2 or more servings along with my lunch (they must be a super-food because it doesn’t take many slices of beets to equal a serving)
Salad for lunch. I adore dinner way too much to waste it on salad so if I have salad for lunch then I don’t feel bad if I have a dinner that is heavier on carbs or protein
Things that prove it is still hard for me to get all those servings in:
I find myself wondering if ketchup counts as a serving of tomatoes (just kidding)
I actually looked online to see if fries count as a serving of veggies (not kidding, sadly)
I desperately measure because even a half serving should be counted toward the daily total
I still have days where I can barely make even half of the day’s requirement!
I know I’ll get there and back to that place where it’s just natural to get in all those fruits and veggies. In the meantime, I am giving myself a HUGE pat on the back each day that I get my HBBC fruit/veggie point because it feels like a big accomplishment.
In other news, my 90 day WIMP plan is coming to a close. This is the last week and so final photos and measurements are coming soon. It also means that we leave for Hawaii in a mere few days – yahoo!
