NYC Half Marathon Training Plan

Posted Jan 03 2012 10:52pm

Hello Everyone! Hopefully your first day back at work was a smooth one :) Today was an exciting day for me because it marked the first official day of my NYC Half Marathon training (as Monday was a rest day).  I found this plan  at about.com  and think it is a perfect fit for my training!

It is advanced beginner, which is what I consider myself.  I have done one half marathon before, but it was over 3 years ago, so I am almost starting from scratch! The one thing I will add is sprinting and hill practice, most likely on the Tuesday run days.  Also, I am starting at week 2 as I have 11 weeks to go!

The last half marathon I did was the Chicago Half in 2008.  I loved the race, but didn’t have a very successful recovery :( It was over a month before I could run again without my knees hurting! It was horrible, because I love running so not being able to do it killed me! I attribute the soreness to a few factors, but mostly the weather conditions of the race.  It was extremely windy and rainy, and as a result cold.  I immediately tensed up after the race because I was freezing, had to wait for a long time to get a train, and then sat on the train, none of which are very good for recovery.  Another factor is that it was my first ever half marathon, and your body gets more and more used to that type of distance running as time goes on.  And finally, I was running 2-3 days a week.  I am hoping if I increase that to 3-4 days a week my body will be more conditioned.  I have talked to many “experts” namely, my friends who have run marathons and halves before, and they think I will be fine, and I do too!

So…the training begins! I am doing really well so far!

Today I woke up with some hot yoga and did an easy 3 miles after work.  I am not used to doing 2 a days, which I know might happen from time to time now that I am balancing half marathon training with other things (triathlon, yoga, and weights) but I made sure to nourish myself well!

Starting my day with oatmeal of course! In case you can’t tell, I am going through a total oatmeal phase right now…

Cranberry oatmeal with blueberries, vanilla chobani, almond butter, and granola

Another special mention was my delicious starbucks hot chocolate for dessert! It was well earned today, and totally hit the spot! It is finally getting cold here, so warming up is necessary.

Here is what my plan looks like for the rest of the week: (Subject to change of course :) )

In 2 weeks my Olympic triathlon training plan starts as well, get excited!

That’s all for tonight, folks!

~~~
What am I thankful for today? Cold weather running gear! I would not have made it through my dark 3 miles without it!
