Non-Food Detoxes

Posted Feb 03 2012 1:21pm

When I got home from BodyPump last night I made a huge salad and thought to myself how many times I have tried to detox. I don’t know why this came to mind since I’m not thinking of doing one, but I couldn’t get it out of my head.

I had read an article earlier about sugar fasts, juice cleanses, *vegan diets, etc and how none of them work long term. After reading all this I came to the conclusion that moderating the food we eat or the drinks we consume isn’t our problem. Diets, cleanses, and fasts are never about the food.

It gave me an idea that I’m going to try and I thought I would share to see if it could help you too.

Our lives are cluttered with stresses of work, trying to fit in time with family and friends while all trying to focus on ourselves. But what if we cleaned up how we lived and acted instead.  This is why I propose a NON- food Detox!

Non-Food Detox

  • Cleanse your mind: Get unplugged and turn off your computer, phone, and TV at least an hour before bed. Your brain needs time to shut down before you sleep so pick up a book or magazine instead and you’ll sleep better and be more refreshed.
  • Electronic Fast: Instead of e-mail or text how about sending a hand written letter to a friend or family member. I plan on doing this for Valentine’s instead of my usual e-cards because it shows you care and took the time. You’ll probably realize how bad your handwriting is(like me) and write more to improve the chicken scratch. Travis sent out thank you notes recently and everyone was so impressed and it brightened their day. It’s so much better to receive a letter in the mail than credit card offers.
  • Declutter your space:When I was little my mom would get my brother and I to go through all our clothes and get rid of the ones we hadn’t worn in over a year or were too big. I do this now and it’s a great way to clear space and donate. If you’re hanging on to those pants or tops you use as weight loss guides, toss them! You don’t need those for inspiration. Find new clothes that make you feel good NOW!

I love this dress, but it's time to toss it!

  • Clean out your cabients:If you have any old products you’ve been holding on to, now is the time to trash them. Old meds, mascara older than 3 months, travel toothpaste you’ve used once. An organized cabinet makes getting ready and looking for things so much easier and stress free. This can go for food in your pantry or fridge too. A deep clean can make you feel better.

    Ready to be cleaned out!

  • If you do at least one of these things you’ll feel a weight lifted off your shoulders.

Detoxes are never really about the food, they’re about cleaning up your habits. But our habits aren’t just with eating, they can be with relationships, stresses at work, and just life in general.

*If you are a vegan please don’t be offended. I’m talking about people who change cold turkey to loose weight.

How do you detox without food?
