No Spend Month (Week 1 progress)

Posted Sep 22 2008 10:35am

We went shopping for food at Ward’s Supermarket (a nature/farmers market of sorts) for a weeks worth of food. Ward’s is a locally run business that supplies regular groceries along with fresh veggies, fruits, meats, and seafood. Friendly people, warm smiles, and the smell of fresh fruits, the supermarket not only stimulates the senses but also the local farming economy.

Shopping list

  • $0.69 - Parsley
  • $2.00 - Kiwis (6)
  • $1.00 - Tangelos (2)
  • $0.69 - Green onions
  • $1.33 - Broccoli Crowns (2)
  • $0.49 - Serano Peppers (4)
  • $1.42 - Sweet Potato
  • $0.95 - Tomatoes (2)
  • $1.00 - Green Peppers
  • $3.49 - Russet potatoes (5lb bag)
  • $5.44 - Mahi Mahi (~1lb)
  • $2.89 - Ground beef
  • $2.99 - Sausage
  • $2.89 - Thin steaks
  • $1.39 - Lentils
  • $1.79 - Eggs
  • $2.55 - Milk
  • $1.59 - Cottage cheese with pinneapple
  • $0.89 - Bread
  • $37.35 Total with tax
With some food still at the house this should be an easy week. We actually foresee food being left over from this shopping trip. As far as typical meal breakdowns…
Breakfast - Milk and toast (I also have oatmeal I have to finish)
Lunch  - Rice & Lentils with Sriracha  hot sauce and parsley
Snack - Cottage cheese with Pineapples (amazing stuff)
Dinner - Consumption of meat/fish along with veggies
Dessert  - Kiwi

We’re only 3 days in but overall it seems manageable and the meals being prepared aren’t necessarily unhealthy. Time will tell how things progress.
