Myth About Exercise? Why TIME wants us Dead.

Posted Aug 07 2009 12:00am

I'm pissed.

This is just a recipe for disaster, I foresee people completely misinterpreting this article. Giving Americans a reason to become more obese, leading to heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, depression, and so on.

I just got "TIME" Magazine in the mail, I got a free subscription when my frequent flyer miles were about to expire--so I am pretty darn happy I didn't pay for this subscription...because I may of when the election and all the other historical events were happening (for keepsake). This magazine, now had completely lost my respect.

Any hoo--the cover story states "The Myth About Exercise" and when you turn to the feature article in the magazine, the caption in bold reads "Why Exercise Won't Make You Thin"

People that skim through articles, like MOST people usually do, will read over the "top experts" little blurbs that John Cloud wrote (probably cutting it the way he wanted). Just to sell magazines.

Immediately, I was pissed...this article was going to be widely misinterpreted...just seeing the less motivated people glance through it, and shortly after feeling this relief of not needing to go to the gym, or workout on a regular bases. American have become more obese in recent years, and growing/ THEY DO NOT NEED TO BE TOLD NOT TO EXERCISE NOW!!!???? WTF!!!??? I have a little more faith in people, than thinking they are going to retire their running shoes because of this--we are not that weak, as he is making is out to be. Just in case there was any doubt, I had to address this ridiculous garbage.

So, I would like to give my interpretation of this article...

I read statements from some "experts" on the topic (who should be researching the reason our ice caps are melting instead of finding ways to make themselves feel better about the spare tire around their belts). He takes a piece of a quote from an exercise researcher that states "In general, for weight loss, exercise is pretty useless" I love it, knowing the ADD of our society, people will read that far, and think they have been saved from their grueling routine at the gym...now they can "just take the stairs, not the elevator", or a "slow stroll in the park". That a lot of people who exercised were overweight, and exercise could be "contributing" to obesity! Are you friggin' KIDDING ME!? WHY ARE YOU TRYING TO GIVE EXERCISE A BAD NAME!!!??? Exercise, that BURNS calories, raises your metabolism, makes you feel better about yourself, endorphins, strong heart, muscle tone, and the list goes on! WHAT'S USELESS IS YOUR ARTICLE, DUDE!

From a mathematical standpoint, exercise may not seem to drastically make a difference from a "calorie burning" perspective (especially the way he breaks it down). But, you can burn about 500 calories in a workout, which can add up to a few pounds (of fat) a month when eating the right foods. He puts a nice little chart on what activities you need to do to burn off a blueberry muffin. Uh, if you are trying to lose weight, lose the muffin, period. Exercising is NOT going to trigger you to start eating muffins all of a sudden, if you are someone that eats muffins, bottom line--don't eat high sugar, processed empty calorie crap! Not, skip your workout, and you will never want a muffin again...on the contrary, I think people who exercise and make a conscious decision to live a healthier lifestyle will be more aware of what they are eating, and feeding their body for nutrition, then those who do not exercise. I DEFINITELY DO NOT buy you're statement saying "exercise is making it harder to lose weight", you have NO idea what you're talking about. If you believe this is true, you are obviously not doing the right things, its not the exercise--and besides, if you are hungrier, its because your muscles are asking to be fed, and when you nourish your body with the nutrients it needs, it will use that energy right up (when you exercise regularly), and the rest passes through (as opposed to being stored in your cells for energy later)....because your metabolism will be HIGHER! Not, don't workout, because you wont be hungry. You're telling me a SLOWER metabolism is YOUR answer to weight loss? Real logical.

So, just have a higher body fat percent, and let that muscle atrophy kick in from being sedentary...setting you up for all kinds of issues (joint problems, osteoporosis, back problems, arthritis, etc). Something else to consider, just think of Fat Bastard at the end of Austin Powers...I know it's a movie, a guy in makeup (the idea came from somewhere) but its what happens when someone obese loses a ton of weight quickly without exercise. If looking good is your prime motivator, you better hit the gym.

He gets into the muscle-fat relationship on page 45. This is good, this REALLY tells me this guy has NO clue what the hank he's talking about. Uh, John? This shows me you were just listening for what YOU wanted to hear and twist for your article, because whomever told you that you "Convert" fat into muscle, either a quack, or you were not listening.

A pound of muscle will burn 6 calories, and a pound of fat burns 2 doing everyday activities, and general vital processes. This is true, if you haven't heard it already. I will add, how a pound of fat takes up WAY more space than a pound of muscle. Think of a 1 pound brick, now think of a pound of cotton candy, whats going to take up more space? Understand? So, the savvy, so sure of himself writer now points out, on his high horse, about if you "Convert" 10 pounds of fat into muscle, you can burn 40 more calories per day, "as much in a pat of butter" before beginning to lose weight", and quote "good luck with that." Now, he had me really boiling, because you can not "convert" fat into muscle. They are two completely different types of tissue. You have more of a chance of turning your pit bull named Daisy into a Supermodel with Magic Powers. --"Good luck with that," Buddy.

Some of the MANY benefits of working out broken down
  • Exercise has been shown to increase your resting metabolic rate. This simply means that your body will burn more calories doing the same things (such as sleeping) than before.
  • It is possible that exercising after eating will make digestion less efficient, thereby allowing calories that would have gotten into your body to pass through.
  • Exercise reduces stress level, and helps you to sleep more sound, therefore--reducing your tendency to eat poorly.
  • Exercise not only decreases levels of inflammatory chemicals (which can block insulin receptors, making cells resist the beneficial effects of insulin) but also increases the amount of insulin and glucose the body uses, rather than stores, by 16 percent. Reducing inflammation, as through exercising, may reduce your joint pain as well as your risk of developing diabetes.
  • Cutting calories alone can decrease your metabolic rate. Increasing your activity level along with cutting calories is a smart way to lose weight.
  • Improved self-esteem is one of the top benefits of regular physical activity. While exercising, your body releases endorphins that can improve your mood and the way you feel about yourself. In then, will result in you having a healthier lifestyle all together.

Then, he brings evolution into the picture. This is great...I have said to people, for years, we should all eat the way our cavemen ancestors ate...from the earth, nuts, seeds, fruits, veggies and meat. No processed foods. They also had to run around all day gathering this food, hunting down mammoth creatures, lifting rocks, building shelter, and what do you think they did for fun? Another calorie burning activity, that people these days are too stressed, depressed, and when not exercising regularly, will have a lesser desire for due to lower levels of testosterone. This is not how he put it though, not his point at all.

What John Cloud is stating is "evolution didn't program us to exercise, what did it program us to do?" HELLO!!?? McMoron!?? Cavemen worked out HARDER than our cab hauling, car driving, video game playing, reality tv watching society, with childhood obesity on the rise, and type II diabetes being diagnosed younger and younger...we are lazy, lazy beings that have "evolved" since then. And you have some reason to contribute to it..just as the only thing people in this recession can still afford to do, trying to keep their sanity, keeping from feeling depressed after losing their jobs--at least they can take control of their health. And you, Mr. Cloud, are printing on the cover of TIME magazine, how useless it is. Good job, nice.

I won't get too into the study w/ the 6 women working out, and eating Starbucks pastries everyday, not understanding why they only lost a little weight. Because its redundant...bottom line is, you can not eat crap, and these women were told to CONTINUE to eat crap, and exercise...while another group ate crap and didn't exercise, and group 1 lost weight, but not a significant amount. Group 2 did not lose. Duh. But why zero in on exercise being the culprit? They were a group that ate poorly to begin with, and you said the group that exercised lost a little, but were SO hungry....maybe because of the constant sugar high and crash cycle they were putting their body through? So ridiculous.

So, is this all true? Will exercise make us fatter? If you are hitting the drive through getting large fries and milkshakes everyday, you are going to be fat. Exercise is not going to make eat this way, its not going to make you decide to become a glutton. If you go into it with the mentality that you are exercising to reward yourself with a Cinnabon, you won't be shopping for smaller jeans anytime soon. This article is fueling the fire for people who are already struggling with motivation, giving people an excuse to not exercise.

If you want to talk research studies John, here's one for you, where's this fit into your fancy article?
"In the study, the benefits of exercise were apparent, even without a change in diet. We saw improvements in insulin sensitivity, less fat in the liver, and less inflammation in belly fat," said Jeffrey Woods, a U of I professor of kinesiology and community health and faculty member in the U of I Division of Nutritional Sciences and the Integrative Immunology and Behavior Program.
"Scientists now know that obesity is associated with a low-grade systemic inflammation. Obese people have higher levels of circulating inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), which are produced and secreted by fat tissue. This inflammation then triggers the systemic diseases linked with metabolic syndrome, such as Type 2 diabetes and heart disease."

I can go on, and on, and on, picking apart this whole article, but I don't think I can hold all of your attention for that long, so I will get to the final points....Thanks, TIME for adding to job loss in an already bad economy when gyms and fitness professionals are struggling to keep clients due to income loss. And Americans don't have much to hold on to after income loss, chunks of their retirement gone, but they at least can have their health, and sanity, when they have the extra time to take care of themselves, exercising to stay strong mentally & physically, warding off depression. Way to stimulate the economy TIME. Just take exercise away from people now too. I understand you are just saying that for weight loss alone, and how exercise is still great for your health...but I know people, and they saw that cover, skimmed the article, and now they think they know everything and can use the excuse to not exercise, because they read it in TIME. Ugh.

Exercise IS great, GREAT for your health, when done properly. It will HELP you to lose weight, and look great in that little black dress. Bottom line...DON'T EAT CRAP! If you listen to this magazine selling, ratings hungry media, then we are all doomed.....

I tend to think maybe its a conspiracy to boom the economy by ways of "eliminating" some of the population. The more obese, lazy, and inactive people get--the higher the rate of fatal heart attacks, strokes, cancer, and other diseases will rise. Don't buy into it. Eat healthy, exercise regularly, get 8 hours of sleep, tell your loved ones how you feel about them daily, and remember the only person that cares most about your health and well-being is yourself.
