My new favourite running gear...

Posted Jan 17 2012 12:18am
We got a whole bunch more snow today so the boys and I laid low and stayed home.  We played in the snow, we watched some Thomas the Tank Engine, and we just generally hung out in our jammies and played.  Even though I was feeling pretty good and not sore after yesterday's 18km, I was just kind of dreading working out tonight.

Then it hit me.  What if I went for a run in the snow?  Great idea!

Although I'm fairly comfortable running at night, I don't generally do it.  You know, just in case.  But with all of the snow, it's way brighter outside and I figured that any creepy guys looking to cause problems were likely inside staying warm and saving their shenanigans for a warmer night.  Ha ha.  Besides, I was kind of eager to try out my snow spikes after digging them out for yesterday's race.  And here they are...

I was really happy with how well they worked!  They're not actual Yak Trax brand, but they are a brand called Due North that Costco sold last year and they were awesome.  I kept running and trying to slide just to get a feel for how "sticky" they were and no matter what I did, I couldn't slip at all.  The roads were mainly packed snow and ice and the sidewalks were everything from fully shovelled and salted to nothing at all.

In no time at all I settled into a nice little rhythm and was enjoying my run.  It was a slow go in some places because of how deep the snow was and I had to dodge the occasional car.  There were so many people out too - people with dogs, kids playing in the snow, couples walking.  It was nice.  I even saw some interesting things
A full sized igloo...

The world's most sinister looking snowman.  (I'm going to have nightmares of this guy tonight.  Sorry about the crappy photo)...

I was enjoying the run so much that when I glanced down at my watch, I had to hoof it back home so that Hubs didn't start to worry.  All in all, here's what I did
  • Total Distance:  6.29km
  • Total time:  47:19
  • Average pace:  7:31/km
