My Love/Hate Relationship with Jillian Michaels

Sometimes I want to smack Jillian Michaels. Don’t get me wrong, I think she is an incredible trainer but I tend to forget that when I’m halfway through one of her workouts and my limbs feel like Jell-O.

I’ve never tuned into “The Biggest Loser” or “Losing it with Jillian!” but I can’t get enough of her exercise DVDs. My absolute favorite is “No More Trouble Zones.” While it has a ridiculous name, the 40-minute workout actually works. You’ll feel like you’ve accomplished something after you finish it and are temporarily stuck in a child’s pose position during the cool down. Don’t be alarmed. It happens to the best of us.

A nice open space, three or five pound hand weights, and sneakers are all you need to do the workout. A towel or mat and a positive attitude could also help, but aren’t required. I personally like to blast my music while I “say goodbye to saddlebags, minimize the muffin top, and transform wobbly arms” because being able to quote exercise DVDs is not something I’m proud of.

You’ll probably cringe and curse Ms. Michaels the first time you do one of her DVDs and sweat is dripping off your body. If you don’t, well, I hate you. That’s not fair. “No More Trouble Zones” is composed of circuits that work the upper and lower parts of your body at the same time, without any rest. Your heart rate will be up the entire time and you’ll be using your hand weights for most of the workout as you do the sculpting moves.

As tough as Ms. Michaels’ workouts can be, I think it’s one of the best workout DVDs out at the moment. Spare an hour to try the workout. Make it a party and do it with some friends. I have a feeling that you’ll also develop a love/hate relationship with Jillian. Stick it out and you’ll be happy with the results.
