My Date with a Nutritionist…

Posted Aug 26 2010 10:17am

So I thought I have been eating well and exercising enough to lose weight. I did lose 15lbs, but that was a year ago, and I still haven’t lost anything since.  I knew something wasn’t right, so I made an appointment with a nutritionist my doctor recommended.

A tip for visiting a nutritionist? BE PREPARED! Bring a food journal with you (that counts calories AND moods), along with your workout schedule. If you do, you just saved yourself a co-pay and another appointment. Because they will make you START a journal and exercise log, and tell you to come back.

The Type-A personality that  I am, I already had my charts and graphs and pie charts (mmmmm pie…) and ready with questions and ready to be critiqued!

She looked over everything, and shook her head and said “I have no idea why you’re not losing weight”

The 3rd doctor to tell me this….

4 weeks ago, I got my thyroid checked, tested for diabetes, cholesterol is great, great blood pressure. I’m as healthy as an ox… a cute chubby bubble butt-ed ox…. (pause for visual image…)

She says: Your calories are perfect, you exercise enough, you eat the right foods. It’s really tricky, so lets tackle one or two variables at a time.

#1. Keep an eye on your percentages.  45% Carbs, 30% Protein and 25% Fat. And I can still have my lattes in the morning (WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOO). Keep my calories at 2000 per day, and exercise normally.

#2 Talk to an exercise specialist / personal trainer. She noticed I do lots of different exercises, which is great, see if they can modify it for MORE intensity.

She then gives me a password to  log onto a website called Nutriinfo.com. This was my favorite part of the appointment!!!!

(those aren’t my stats, clearly)

The website is an online food journal, which I have done before, but it has SOOOO many more features than other ones I’ve used! And get this… SHE has access to it, and she will read it AND make comments and suggestions on my profile!! I love technology! The website also sends you email alerts if you happen to forget to log in food, or exercise. Imagine that! I don’t want to get an email everyday because I missed a workout, or I had a side of chocolate cake with my macaroni and cheese. There is something about being held accountable for your actions, especially if someone else is watching, that really makes you stay on point.

Some people may not know this about me, but I LOVE feedback. Not to be scrutinized, or to be malicious to me. But if a person has good intentions of advice, I will GLADLY take it. Even if it means they have to tell me what I’m doing is wrong. How else do you get better?

Here is a screenshot of my food log today! Super easy user interface!

My amazing boyfriend, went food shopping for us this week and got all healthy stuff! He’s on the healthy kick too. I douched out my fridge and pantry, and got rid of half full bottles of condiments that took up all our space.  BBQ sauce, alfredo sauce, fancy mustards, relish, marinades, old cheese, mayo, tartar sauce… gone. Now, not to say I fully wasted them.. they were VERY old and half gone. But just throwing away not-great-for-you foods made it really feel like I was starting over. Hit up the pantry, out with all the moldy bread, the stale chips, dusted off the cans of beans and non-expired healthy soup!

I dont know about you guys, but if there are a ton of dishes in the sink, I NEVER want to cook. SO, I made sure all the dishes were done, counters immaculate, fruit bowl full, stove cleaned. A nice clean slate to cook my meals.

I’m excited about the process, I’ve been in and out of doctors for weeks now, in a possibly related issue as to why I’m not losing weight, we’ll talk about that next time! I’ll keep updates about my nutritional journey! Does anyone else use Nutriinfo.com?

On my way out of the office, she mentioned ‘It’s deceiving, your weight. You have a nice figure, small little waist, that’s a good thing!’

 Damn skippy it is!! ;)
