My Calorie Counter

Posted Jun 27 2011 3:48pm

Have you ever pondered the nutritional significance of low-fat, no moisture mozzarella? Do you wonder how much damage is done by eating a pint of blueberries in one sitting?

If you are anything like me, the nutritional value of food can be lost in translation. I understand the basic principles of a healthy diet, but can’t always vouch for choices that I make. I often eat a pint of blueberries at a time, and while there are worse things I could be binging on, I have no idea how many calories I’ve actually consumed.

Until now…

My Calorie Counter is book of nutritional information compiled by authors Jennifer Sucov and Maureen Namkoong for everydayhealth.com . It is an extension of their useful online calorie-counting tools. I wasn’t sure what a book about calorie counting might entail, but I was pleasantly surprised when I got my hands on a copy. (Get your hands on your own copy by entering my giveaway! Scroll to the bottom of this post for details.)

Inside the book, nutrional data for over 8,000 food items, everything under the sun – plus guidelines for implementing a healthy diet and how to effectively use calorie-counting for weight control. For the record: 1 pint of blueberries=100 calories

I can see how this book will quickly become my right-hand man. It has information for common foods that I use in meals, plus store brands and restaurant items! I love that they provided more than just fat and calorie counts. Knowing the fiber and protein content is also important, especially as I transition away from eating meat and consuming for vegetables and legumes.

Now, my dumbfounded gaze won’t draw stray glances from strangers in the dairy aisle. Instead, people will stare curiously because I have pulled a book out of my purse and decided to start examining the brand name cheeses.

The book is the perfect size to go in your purse or backpack. Granted, my purse is big enough to fit 15 copies of the book…
