my 7 day juice cleansing journey

Posted Mar 16 2013 10:38am

For those of you who don’t know, I’ve just officially finished a 7 day juice cleanse. HOORAY! {go me, go me} Some people will look at me and say, “but Carly, you don’t need to lose weight!” Let me tell you my love- my juice cleansing is NOT to lose weight- although that is typically an outcome. Juice cleansing is a total body reset: a chance for the earth, for nature, for our mama- to do her job and heal anything that need healing.

Juicing consists of fresh (and optimally organic and local if available) ingredients put through a juicer to extract only liquid and leaving all the fiber from the veggies behind. It’s an optimal way to extract vitamins, minerals, and everything your body needs and wants in a simple, delicious, healing way. It is SO detoxifying that many holistic cancer therapies revolve around juicing for health. [For more about this, you should check out Hippocrates and The Gerson Therapy .]

While the body cleanses with fresh juices, all sorts of things can come up: past injuries can come to the surface, old emotions you thought you got rid of, highs and lows, crying sessions, and great toxic release. You can expect things like this, especially if you have more of an acidic body– (reminder: alkaline foods are raw greens, vegetables, fruits, soaked nuts and seeds, and sea vegetables. everything else falls under neutral or acidic)

I thought my body was going to respond fairly well to this cleanse since I am very clean: but oh did “stuff” come up for me!!! (you never know with cleanses, but it’s a fun card game to play!) I got a bit of a cold, some skin breakouts, and some emotional lows. What I know: it was all just a release. Old things that were a part of my old life that were coming up to try and play a trick on me, to scare me: they were coming up so that I could fully accept them, be okay with them, release them, and cleanse on a deeper level: and for this I am so grateful.

Now, I am very in tune with my body- and I knew that this cleanse should be focused on cleansing and clearing my liver, which is why the emotional side to this cleanse was so intense. The liver is the organ that stores the most amount of anger, guilt, and fear. While I like to live and express joy, abundance, acceptance, and love in my day to day life, there were days that this was not the case. Plus, after being really in touch with my organs by way of reiki, I knew that my liver and gallbladder area had a little of work to do. I combined advice from many of my trusted health gurus out there with my own personal wisdom and preference. Here is what my week looked like:

Morning Shake: 1 lemon, 1 lime, 1 clove garlic, 1 tbsp olive oil, 1 inch ginger,
1 cup water- blended. (each day the garlic and olive oil was increased by 1)
Breakfast: Juice of 1 beet, 2 green apples, few leaves of chard, few leaves of kale,
handful of mint and 1 stick fennel
Lunch: Juice of 6 carrots, 1 handful parsley, celery, ginger, and lime
Dinner: Juice of celery, kale, cucumber, green apple, lemon, fennel, and mint.

This is just a rough draft of the week, which also included a yummy sweet potato soup, apple-fennel juice, and lots of yogi detox teas with dabs of coconut oil.

raw sp soup

raw sweet potato soup: juice of 6 carrots, 1 sweet potato, and 1/2 inch ginger. blended wiith 1/2 avocado, 1 tsp miso paste, 1 tsp coconut oil, and topped with fennel.

beet ball

for when my sweet teeth just needed a little something: the pulp from apple and beet juice mixed with a tbsp of coconut butter. simple sweet delicious!

The 8th day was intense gallbladder flush with 3/4 cup olive oil blended with 2 lemons and 1 grapefruit- and then straight to bed. If you are new to juicing and/or cleansing, I do not suggest this protocol for you! It’s recommended to cleanse the colon BEFORE you do a liver cleanse. I’m a bit used to this type of cellular and emotional cleansing- as I’ve done many before.

The best part about this cleanse: I was so supported. Cleanse America brings a group of strangers together for a 10 day cleanse through a simple Facebook group. The love, encouragement, support, tips, recipes, and ideas that flow through this group is quite outstanding. If you are ever thinking of doing a cleanse, I highly recommend signing up through this site. Having a group of like minded folk to share with is something that really kept me going.

I made this video for our group over at Cleanse America on how to forgive, release, and move on if you ever “mess up” on your cleansing journey.
