Everyone I talked to before the marathon recommended I not run with music as it would take away from the experience. While I was convinced the course and its spectators would motivate me in a way I could never imagine, I still needed my iPod. It has become my security blanket. However, I made a promise with myself that I would not listen to it until I needed a boost. Even though I ran with my bright pink Yurbuds in my ears the entire race for ease, I didn’t listen to my iPod until mile 21-24.
Many people have requested my NYC Marathon playlist. Even though I didn’t end up needing or using these songs, they were put together ahead of time to provide the boost and smile I thought I’d need during the race.
Since the marathon, I have absolutely loved working out to this mix. It has a mix of old and new songs, each associated with their own memory. For example, DMB Crash Into Me will always remind me of many a high school summer. The Ying Yang Twins and their song Get Low was the soundtrack for Dance Marathon during college. These songs help bring a smile to my soul when I’m on the last mile, last rep, or last hill.
