Mouth Money – 30 Days, Day 27

As if the delicious food and great nutrition didn’t give me enough ammunition in favor of the “Primal lifestyle,” today I spent 12 hours navigating the best of NYC tourism – from 10 AM to 10 PM – in a pair of Vibram Five Fingers . At first I was slightly worried about my comfort – wouldn’t it be better for me to have a modicum of padding on my feet? My desire to find out just how much “better” pseudo-barefoot walking is for the whole body outweighed my concerns.

Turns out I was more comfy during the day and felt perfect once the day was over. Usually a few hours on my feet and I feel like my lower back needs to be streeeetched out and my legs and knees are just generally uncomfortable. Not today!

I’m assuming #5 on this list is why I felt so good by the end of the day.

2 of 3 meals today were eaten at NYC restaurants and provide further proof that it’s possible to maintain the “Paleo” ideals when you’re out enjoying life.

Breakfast: Blueberry coconut flour pancakes – composed of eggs, 2 Tbs. coconut flour, a bit of coconut oil and some coconut milk. While the recipe called for sugar, I eliminated it and Husband was none the wiser. Coconut flour is extremely absorbent and makes amazing baked goods – all you need is lots of egg. (Protein! How many baked goods have adequate protein?)

Alongside a few strips of bacon and scrambled eggs, we were all set for a good 6 hours.

I can’t stress enough how much better my life is gluten, grain, and dairy-free. Eliminate it from your diet for 30 days, then have a gluten-containing item. You’ll see just how much better you feel without it. Take that a few steps further and go all-Paleo. You’ll feel like you won the lottery, found the Magic Lamp and the Ruby Slippers, then stumbled over buried treasure while relaxing on the beach in Greece. Your life will be better. Isn’t that what everyone wants?

Lunch: Husband and I went halvesies on 2 salads – one a Tuna Nicoise salad with boston lettuce and egg, the other a lamb salad with roasted peppers and walnuts. Both came with variations of vinaigrette dressings. Both were delicious, and since we’d had such a great breakfast the salads were enough to keep us going.

A few hours later we split a large Paleokit on the ferry out of Ellis Island.

Dinner: Anna M. of dead-hang pull-up fame recommended Bubby’s based on its ridiculously-good-ness and its commitment to using locally-raised, grass-fed ami-nals for their knockout menu. Being from Kansas City, I believe I can call myself a BBQ snob – so when an establishment boasts about its BBQ savvy I have to try it. While the pulled pork tasted a bit salty, it was truly delicious and didn’t require the sauce-drenching that most East Coast BBQ does. With a side of veggie fries (strips of beet, parsnip and carrot fried until crisp), some nearly-cucumber pickles, and steamed broccoli, this meal really hit the spot.

Sleep: We paid a late-night visit to Times Square. That place is the nemesis of Circadian Rhythms everywhere.

While I loathe the Hi-Def display of consumerist trickery that is Times Square, my mother-in-law described it so beautifully and very intriguingly: It’s a “Sea of Humanity.” This is our world, and it’s full of people – healthy people, people of integrity, people who’ll pick your pocket, people just trying to get by, people who are fat and sick and have pre-teen children that are fat and sick. I hope with all my heart that the rubber (waist)band will snap back from the indulgences that are killing us to a balanced, healthy state of being. Advertisers take note – if people weren’t so enormous, you could fit more of them in Times Square.
