As of 10pm last night, I officially have reached the midpoint in culinary school! I remember when I got my orientation packet in the mail and putting that very note into my iPad calendar thinking that I had such a long way to go. Time flies people!
Yesterday was my midterm and although I was slightly nervous about it, I knew that no matter what I got I would be just fine in the end.
So I slept in a bit and made myself breakfast using some ham leftovers from Easter.
After taking care of some stuff around the apartment I took an early train to meet up with Sam so we could study a bit before the test.
It truly felt like a new chapter. It was the first time that I didn’t have to bring my heavy coat in 6 months and the weather was gorgeous! The air had that travel/vacation type smell that made me feel like I was on a short getaway.
We ended up in Madison Square Park which was packed with people who were reading, tanning, walking their dogs or enjoying a nice meal outdoors.
We snagged a table and got to work.
While we were there I enjoyed my meal from home. We had some pasta with broccoli and garlic left from Easter so I used that plus some leftover shrimp cocktail that I threw in a pan with olive oil and garlic.
Then we headed in for the big test. We were the first group to cook and we had 90 minutes to execute a salad with a vinaigrette, carrot soup and of course a poached pear .
I was super organized so I finished pretty fast without many problems.
After clean up we headed right into the lecture room for the written portion. There was a LOT of various info on there but I think I did ok.
Once the second group finished, Chef Jay called us each over to tell us our grade for the cooking portion.
I was surprised that he told me I under seasoned my soup and salad dressing. I say this because I LOVE salt and put it in everything . . . I guess I was holding back because I thought that I just had an abnormal addiction to it. Also, my pear isnt supposed to be drowning in reduction sauce like the picture above . . . that’s how I like it though!
Either way . . . I ended up with a . . .
96!!
*so proud*
From now on, we are no longer newbies. We saw the new class start last night and its officially time to move on to the big round . . . I’m ready!!
