Mental Breaks from Stress

Posted Oct 26 2011 10:58am

Last night

I finally was able to enjoy pumpkin beer. I’ve been craving it for too long!! Dogfish Punk – hit the spot and I am satisfied :) Enjoyed at a local restaurant aside a green salad topped with grilled chicken. Dressing on the side! (I hate when restaurants add the dressing..either they over-do it or under-do it). Enjoyed with good company and a break from studying.

I’m in my second year of getting my masters for acupuncture.. and its stressful to say the least. Commuting, plus working as a nurse, taking care of things at home, and all the studying + paper writing gets very overwhelming at times. I tend to get anxious and irritable when things gets rough, so I’m trying very hard not to let it get to me. Ways I cope with anxiety/stress:

Exercise. This for me is key in managing both stress + anxiety. Done early in the morning, it sets the tone for the day and makes me so happy.

When things don’t go your way- don’t. freak. out.
I thrive off of my schedule. But of course..things don’t always plan out or go the way they should. Example: yesterday I was up by 5am and instead of getting a morning workout done + school work, I was taking care of my dad who woke up nauseous  and throwing up, very dizzy, high blood pressure, and pale/ dusky.
[To my new readers (hi!) I live at home and help take care of my dad + grandfather.]
Lucky men to have an actual nurse on board to take care of them :)
But anyway, I was taking care of him most of the day, and didn’t get to do other things I had planned. And I would be lying if I said it didn’t make me stressed and anxious. What to do? Deep breaths and realize everything will be fine. Didn’t get my weight session/circuit workout in that I had planned. No big deal- life happens and there is always tomorrow.  (And rest is when changes really happen in your body…something that I need to remind myself about sometimes). Didn’t get any studying done.. but thats okay. Well not really. Haha!

Take Breaks

Even though I had so much on my plate yesterday, I went out in the evening once my dad was feeling a little better. Good company and a beer was nice! With everything going on in my mind, I just needed to be in the present moment and chill out for a second.
When I take mini breaks at home, it usually involves playing with this guy:

And these cuties (!!)

These are the friendliest and snuggly-est animals. Seriously. I went outside and just held the little black one and he fell asleep in my arms. I swear they are just like dogs. I need to get them little coats for the winter :)

Blog Reading

Although..this can get me into trouble. I read so many blogs and love finding new ones. Then I start finding recipes… researching things about food… coming up with new workouts… and there goes time that I should have been doing something else! At least it makes me happy :)

Cooking + Baking

Huge stress reliever for me. Love to be in the kitchen and just focus on the task of making something delicious and healthy.

What are ways you like to take mental or physical breaks? Getting a massage is on my list of things to do!! I need one so bad…
