Marathon Training Week 3: Rest Week?

Posted Jul 14 2011 9:04pm

Well last week didn’t exactly go as expected.

It started out great: Spin, Barry’s Bootcamp, Speedwork, and plans for a long run on my favorite trail in Seattle.

The week started out looking like this:

Monday: Rest

Tuesday: Spin

Wednesday: Run Club – 5 miles of hills

Thursday: Barry’s Bootcamp

My foot had given me a little trouble before my run on Wednesday but I had pushed through one of the harder runs in my life (90 degrees, heat advisory, hills, bridges) without too much trouble. But on Thursday morning my foot was KILLING me – seriously, it was hard to stand. I went to Barry’s and luckily it was feeling good enough to run on. Thursday morning I had recieved my training plan from my running coaches (after working with these lovely ladies at Lululemon Run Club, I knew I wanted to enlist their help in training smart and hopefully avoiding injury!) and had emailed them telling them about my foot pain. Friday called for 2 easy miles, so I woke up early and did 2.5 fairly fast miles. When I got home, I had an email from my coach asking if I thought I might want to take a week off from training to try to heal my foot. She said this early on, it wouldn’t affect my training, and it might allow me the chance to fully heal and race pain free.

All of these things sounded nice – pain free running especially. But an entire week off? And not just from running – from everything except upper body exercises? No spin, not even a yoga class. I decided to skip my long run Saturday and give it some thought. Eventually what I came to realize is that 1) Coaches know more than me, that’s why they are coaches and 2) Pain is bad, I should listen to my body, take a week off and give it a chance to really heal.

So, Saturday and Sunday were rest days. I took the extra time to spend with family and friends in Seattle at Nate’s brother’s wedding and had a great time.

Even though it’s been a tough week, I have definitely realized what a huge role exercise plays in my life and how grateful I am that I am able to be so active.

Every day since last Friday has involved some upper body work and lots of ice.

And by ice, I mean a bag of frozen peas. Also if you look really hard you can see what walking around the city in flip flops does to your feet. Ew.

Anyway, not exactly the training week I had hoped for, but I’m confident that these rest days will make for a successful, pain-free marathon. Tomorrow morning I get to run again!
