Home Beauty Magazine beauty recommendations- toxic or non-toxic?

I love to read fitness, health, and fashion magazines for their information, recipes, product reviews, and photos.

But a girl needs a trashy tabloid thrown into the mix every now and then, which is why reading Us Weekly is my guilty pleasure.

In this week’s issue, there is a piece on green beauty products (following the story capturing the demise of Ashton and Demi, of course).

The piece includes recommendations for some new-to-me products, which made me pretty excited.

Since I thought you might be interested to know what products are featured, I listed them out below.  I also looked up their ratings on EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database, so you can see how they stack up in terms of toxicity.

Skin Deep Rating Scale

  • A score of 0-2 means low hazard
  • A score of 3-6 means moderate hazard
  • A score of 7-10 means high hazard

Skin

La Prairie Advanced Marine Biology Tonic (not listed in the EWG database)

L’Occitane Limited Edition Hand Cream (specific product not listed; hand creams range from 6-9 on the rating scale)

Weleda Wild Rose Deodorant (rating of 6-7)

Dr. Hauschka Moor Lavender Body Oil (specific product not listed; other body oils range from 3-5)

Arcona Triad Pads (specific product not listed; other face pads have a rating of 2)

Makeup

Josie Maran Beautiful Eyes Palette (specific product not listed; other eye shadows have a rating of 4)

Sunday Riley Lip Color (not listed in the EWG database)

EcoTools’ Bamboo Bronzer Brush (brushes are not listed)

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush (specific product not listed)

Hair

Aveda Dry Remedy Moisturizing Conditioner (specific product not listed; other conditioners range from 2-6 with the Rosemary Mint conditioner being the least toxic)

Garnier Fructis Pure Clean Finishing Paste (specific products not listed; regular pastes have a rating of 6)

Aveeno Living Color Shine Glaze (specific product not listed; brands ratings range from 0-10)

Klorane Gentle Dry Shampoo (rating of 6)

Unfortunately, a lot of the products were not yet rated on the database.  As you probably noticed, the products that were listed had mediocre ratings for the most part.    I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Aveda’s Rosemary Mint Conditioner rates so well though!

I also learned that Ashton and Demi’s marriage is totally over.  Guess it will just be added to the celebrity marriage graveyard!

Have you tried any of these products yet?  If so, what did you think?

Do you read magazines?  What are your favorites?  I love Self, In Style, Shape, and Allure.  I used to read every magazine under the sun, but I’ve really cut back in recent years.

Enjoy your weekend!

(PS- I saw The Addams Family musical with my family last night and really enjoyed it.  At first, I was a little disappointed that Brooke Shields wasn’t in that performance, but I quickly got over it because the show was so entertaining and funny.  So even though I didn’t get to add Brooke’s signature to my autograph book, I’d definitely recommend the show!)

  1. Oh no! I can’t believe Brooke wasn’t in the musical. So glad you still had fun though :)

Yeah, I was really bummed about Brooke, but the cast that I saw was fantastic. Still…it would have been cool to see her!

  2. That would be a cool musical to see. We are going to see the Christmas Story next month – I like the movie so hopefully the theater production will be good if it follows close to the movie. I am a reading junkie – books, magazines, labels on cans, etc. Love health, food, wine, travel mags – been a subscriber of Sunset Magazine for years and pick up other mags at the library. I love the beauty posts because really what you put on your skin is absorbed by your body – uber important to be careful of harmful minerals or chemicals in those types of products – Thanks:)

  3. Yea! I’m glad it was fun though we missed you on Thursday night! Thanks for being our human tester for all the new products.

  4. I haven’t used any of the products listed, but I’m super nervous to check out my products on that website…

You may actually be pleasantly surprised when you look up some of your current products. I was SO excited when I saw that my Smashbox eyeliner rates a 2. Now I won’t be parting with it any time soon!
