You guys rock. Seriously. After soliciting you guys for all your awesome cold remedies, and getting over one hundred responses , I figured I’d better get my sniffling self to the grocery store so that I could start making some of your concoctions. For the first time since we moved here (literally), I got in my car and actually drove somewhere – I headed just a few miles away to Mom’s Organic Market.
I have explored all the Old Town grocery options (which are awesome), but I had heard good things about Mom’s and figured it was worth checking out. Specifically, I was in search of BULK BINS !
Now that you’ve all seen my kitchen , you know that I organize all our grains, beans, and other pantry items into ball jars . Shopping in bulk is the easiest, cheapest, and most environmental way to keep the jars full, and our pantry stocked.
While Mom’s had a pretty good selection, I did find myself longing for the endless options in Charlotte’s Healthy Home Market. Well played, Charlotte, well played. Despite missing a few favorite items, they did have a great selection of bulk spices and teas – awesome!
I filled up my bulk bags and made my way around the store for a few other essentials.
I stumbled upon something in the refrigerated section that was a total first for me. Anyone seen this before?
Look closer – a big communal grab & go trashcan full of TOFU ! I’ve never seen anything like it! Casey said he saw something similar at the food co-op in Berkeley – anyone else? For some reason it kind of freaked me out.
I listened to all of your wonderful advice and remedies, and picked up enough supplies to set up a cold and flu triage center in here.
Two different types of Yogi teas – various cold remedies and green tea triple Echinacea (which I am drinking as we speak).
Three different types of delicious organic juice (fluids! fluids!). Orange mango, lemon ginger Echinacea, and apple juice – all of my calories are coming in liquid form today since I have absolutely no appetite.
A few of you mentioned ginger being helpful, so I picked up these ginger chews at Trader Joe’s – SPICY!
Ten points to the reader who reminded me that we should probably buy new toothbrushes. Good call!
I’m drinking fluids like it is my JOB. I never really drink juice anymore, so it’s kind of fun to have an excuse to guzzle it down.
Sadly, we had to cancel our dinner plans since by 5pm things had really not improved. :( Despite feeling like crap myself, Casey was feeling much worse than me. Even though neither one of us had any appetite, I figured we needed to eat something other than juice. I pulled out the makings for comforting homemade vegetable soup.
I didn’t want to try anything fancy, so I just stuck with the basics here – mirepoix vegetables – carrots, celery, and onions. A few of you mentioned raw garlic as being beneficial, but I just couldn’t bring myself to try that. I threw a few cloves into the soup though just in case cooked garlic was just as good!
I sauteed the veggies until well browned, and then filled up my stock pot with a few quarts of vegetable broth.
I tossed in a few bayleafs, black peppercorns, a bit of thyme, and some sage, and let it simmer for about 45 minutes. My other secret ingredient? Cayenne pepper – gave it a sinus cleansing kick, and a great spice factor. About ten minutes before we were ready to eat, I dumped in a cup of orzo pasta, and the end of a bag of another pasta we had in the pantry.
Final result? Pretty darn tasty!
It doesn’t look too exciting, but the flavor was great, and it was exactly what we needed.
Originally I thought about adding beans to this, but for some reason that just didn’t sound appetizing to me. Comforting pasta sounded much better!
I am starting to feel a bit better, but Casey is heading south quickly. I feel so bad for him – he’s just miserable. :( And I’m a little scared since I am a day behind him – hoping I don’t wake up like that tomorrow! Hopefully this soup helps us both.
Because weekend are for fun and playing, NOT for tissues and body aches.
Here’s hoping that all the fluids pay off! Thank you all for the awesome suggestions. I feel so lucky to have such great advice just a few keystrokes away. :)
