Lee's Guide to Healthy Eating Habits: Part II

Posted Apr 11 2011 3:39pm
As I talked about in Part I of my super-duper special guide , substitutions of your favorite fatty foods for something a little healthier can make all the difference.  On this glorious Monday (and I'm not being sarcastic, because it is actually gorgeous in NYC today), I have a few more tips that you can try this week to make your life a bit healthIer :-)

1.  Vegetables: I consider vegetables to be "free" calories.  Since they are so vitamin- and nutrient-rich, and also since most people don't get enough of them in their diets, I believe that you shouldn't limit your intake of veggies.  A great way to curb your calorie intake is to fill up your plate with mostly vegetables, say 1/2 your plate, then add your protein and starches.  That way you will get your recommended serving of veggies while limiting your intake of sugary or fatty foods without giving them up altogether.  It's a win-win!

2.  Do NOT keep junk food in the house:  Don't get me wrong, I love my occasional sweets.  A good majority of the time I  have a craving for sweety or salty snacks though, and if I had them in my apartment, I would definitely eat them.  The thought of having to walk outside to the store usually makes me realize that it isn't a dire necessity to fulfill these cravings, and I opt for something healthier.  I saw this comic on The Oatmeal , one of my favorite humor sites, and I thought it was perfect for this post.  Do NOT go to the grocery store hungry!  Have a snack beforehand to prevent impulse snack attacks
3.  Snacks:  Choosing healthy snacks, like veggies, can help you keep your metabolism going while preventing extreme hunger during your meals that will make you overeat.

Happy Monday!  Keep in mind all of these tips and you will have a happier and healthier week!
