"Laces are for my 12-year-old son, not the scholarship quarterbacks at Notre Dame," - Brian Kelly

Posted May 10 2010 8:02pm
The countdown for the start of the football season begins the moment the Vince Lombardi Trophy is trotted out. It's a long and dull six months till the preseason starts in August. This year, however, has been different. Following the NFL draft became a daily obsession (thank you Tim Tebow) and I was glued to every play during Notre Dame's Blue and Gold scrimmage (thank you Brian Kelly).

I have not been this excited about the start of a Notre Dame football season in years and that's because of Kelly. While we have, yet, to see what the Kelly era will bring I love this guy already. My father is of the opinion that Kelly is Notre Dame's last chance to turn the program around and I agree with him. I'm personally giving Kelly five years to do or die. If he can take the Irish to a championship by 2015 (not saying he will but a girl can dream) I am totally naming one of my yet-to-be-born children Brian Kelly.

So far he's saying all the right things. I love his attitude. I love Camp Kelly. I love that ND again has a coach who was (gasp) a winning HEAD COLLEGE football coach. I love his hunger.

It's a little belated, but you can check out ESPN's All Access video with Kelly and the team from earlier this spring.

This quote from April pretty much sums up what the program has been missing these last few years.

"Most of the guys here were more interested in whether they were on Mel Kiper's Big Board. I want guys who are more interested in what they can do for Notre Dame," Kelly told ESPN's Mark Schlabach.

Amen. Hummer arriving wannabe college quarterbacks need not apply.
