Knick Knack Paddywack

Posted Feb 05 2012 11:46pm

I just can’t believe that my little girl is 9 months old.

9 Months.

Where did the time go?

Before I know it we will be sending her off to nursery school, planning her sweet sixteen, and then visiting her at college.

Not so fast though.

Right now we are just soaking up every moment. I have to admit though, these past two months have been my absolute favorites thus far.

She’s really discovering the world around her, and has hit so many milestones in the past several weeks. She started crawling on January 1st, the very shortly after was pulling herself up, cruising, babbling, almost saying “banana” (she says “na nana), on the verge of saying “dada” (and I could have sworn she said mommy yesterday!) Last week two of her teeth came in and we are counting down the days until she takes her first steps.

Ella really loves her books. Her favorite, hands down, is “Ten Little Ladybugs.”

Runners up are “The Very Hungry Caterpillar,” “How Big is Baby Elmo” and “Hop On Pop.” When I try and read her anything else from her library, she grunts for the ladybugs. I usually read it about 3 or 4 times before she goes to sleep.

That or I start to recall some nursery rhymes and bedtime stories from my own childhood.

The only “story” I seem to ever remember in without making crap up is Goldilocks. The only nursery rhyme I’ve impressed myself in remembering was “Knick Knack Paddywack.” When Ella was about two months old Michael and I would look up the lyrics to things online (what did parents do before internet?) and I actually didn’t mess up any of the words! Unlike most of the other nursery rhymes I sing to Ella.

Like when I catch myself singing a blend between hot cross buns and 3 blind mice…..

“The blind mice, tasty and fun, try and eat just one….”

Wait, what?

Or how I couldn’t remember the words to “1, 2 buckle my shoe” but I could remember the words from the Freddy Kreuger movie…

“1, 2 buckle my shoe

3, 4 lock the door

5, 6 pick up sticks

7, 8 stay up late

9, 10 never sleep again.”

No.

So if I don’t seriously traumatize my daughter from all these demented nursery rhymes it would be a miracle.

The other thing that I do, which Michael pointed out to me and constantly makes fun of is how I call everything “little.”

“Mike, can you grab me her little teething toy?”

“I just need want a little sip.”

“I’m going to take a little shower.”

Did you see my little thing-a-ma-jig?”

He told me the other day I asked him to get my one and only yoga mat from the bedroom and he said…

“which one, the little one”

My reply was “yeah.”

He told me he was just snickering to himself because I  obviously didn’t catch it.

I’m just happy that I keep my people entertained around here.

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend! We had a lot of fun as a family. Ella’s first Superbowl was a success. She loved the puppy bowl! I can’t get over the fact that it was Puppy Bowl VIII. I remember watching the very first puppy bowl when I still lived at home with my mom. My sister and I thought it was the most genius, amazing and adorable production to ever bless the television.

Because it is.

As you can see, Ella was mimicking the puppies as she dove to wrestle her laugh and learn puppy. Munchkin was watching all day in the bedroom. I put it on for him every year. He pretends to care when I come in the room.

What’s the funniest “improv” nursery rhyme or bedtime story you’ve caught yourself reciting?

Unrelated…I’m thinking about either setting up a separate page to share a lot of the baby food Ella’s been enjoying. We are starting to venture into new foods and I’ve been learning a lot! Either that or I may just start doing a baby-type post once a week.

Okay, it’s almost midnight, I need to get my butt to bed.

Goodnight!
