Kentucky Proud

Posted Mar 21 2011 11:48am

I have lived in Kentucky most of my life, but I am only now beginning to appreciate the local flavor and beauty this state has to offer. Once I opened my eyes and started to look around, I discovered many local treasures that I plan to feature on my blog. Kentucky may not have the most exciting reputation among the 50 states, but it has a lot to offer!

The Kentucky Proud Program was developed as a way for consumers to identify local products.

The average meal travels 1,500 miles from the farm to your plate, resulting in lost nutritional value and taste every mile of the way.

Buying local products decreases this distance and ensures that you’re eating fresh and nutritious foods while supporting community farm families. This also strengthens the local economy by keeping dollars at home and building a sense of community during the process.

Paul’s Fruit Market has been serving Louisville since 1945 and specializes in fresh fruit and gift baskets. They also carry a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables as well as homemade salads, deli and specialty items. They have an entire wall dedicated to Kentucky Proud local products.

It is one of my favorite places to browse around and pick up produce, fresh made tabouli or some local made treats.

Do you try to shop local in your town? What are some of your favorite places?
