June in Ontario

Posted Oct 22 2008 6:13pm
Photo taken yesterday at one of our beautiful city gardens

Cathy has challenged me to write a haiku to go with this picture.
And she is the poet! So I did this rather than wash my windows on this beautiful day :-)

Haibun for a June Garden

They speed along the highway, unseeing, rushing to destinations unknown.
Stop at the oasis in a desert of concrete.
An old man walks by on the arm of a young woman and a mother pushes a pram in the sunshine. I sit on a bench surrounded by dazzling blooms, buzzing bees and flitting butterflies. A blue jay calls my name.

Rainbow of colour,
fresh breeze, birdsong, flower smiles...
Eden of the soul.

What is one to say about June,
the time of perfect young summer,
the fulfillment of the promise of the earlier months,
and with as yet no sign to remind one
that its fresh young beauty will ever fade.

Gertrude Jekyll,
On Gardening
