Juice Plus+® Children's Health Study

Posted Jul 05 2009 12:00am

Juice Plus+® is a fruit and vegetable concentrate made from the juice of a variety of fruits and vegetables, without the water and sugar. What's left when the juice is dried is a concentrate of phytonutrients from the whole food. Although not a source for the natural fiber and water that exists in the whole food of the fruits and vegetables, Juice Plus+® does provide the nutrients, an important part of maintaining good health.

Today more than ever, children are lacking a diet with adequate nutrition and it is taking a toll on the health of our nation, as well as around the world. In the US, more children are unhealthy and overweight as a result of a poor diet, which most importantly lacks sufficient fruit and vegetable intake.

A report released last week shows that obesity is harming the health of millions of Americans, including children and teens. The report, "F as in Fat: How Obesity Policies are Failing in America 2009," from the Trust for America's Health, says that 28.8 percent of Maryland youths ages 10 to 17 are overweight or obese - and thus at increased risk of a long list of chronic health problems such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, atherosclerosis and some cancers.

None of this comes as much of a shock. But here's something that most people probably would find surprising: Despite the fact that they generally eat more than enough food, overweight children also can suffer from malnutrition.

How can a fat teenager living in Baltimore experience malnutrition, a condition that brings to mind images of children with swollen bellies living in Africa, the Asia-Pacific region and other impoverished parts of the developing world?

Originally from Nigeria, I am a nutritional biochemist who studies the interactions among dietary habits, infections, inflammation and immunity. Today, global health research tells us that malnutrition is as much about what we eat as what we do not; it is either a lack of adequate food or an overabundance of nutritionally bankrupt foods. A program exists for those parents who want to help their children get more nutrients in their diet, by offering the opportunity to get Juice Plus+® fruit and vegetable nutrients for free. The program studies the effects that Juice Plus+® and other dietary changes have on a child, over the course of a year. With each adult who orders the Juice Plus+® Capsules, a free order can be included for a child between the ages of 4 and 17 or any undergraduate college student. The important thing to focus on when it comes to a healthy diet is adequate fruit and vegetable intake, whether it is for you or your children. Without the minimum intake each day, it is easy to understand how 'malnutrition' would be the result, even though plenty of calories are being consumed. Being satiated from fruits and vegetables not only ensures plenty of good nutrition for good health, but it also prevents eating foods that are fattening and deficient of whole food nutrients. Changing to a healthy diet can do so much more than just reducing the obesity epidemic in children or adults. Indirectly, the changes that will likely occur are an increase in energy, reduced stress, improved attitude, increased productivity, and even a higher income. Start living healthier today.
