Did you know that Chiropractors adjust extremities? Did you know the pain in an extremity can come from the spine. The word extremity refers to all other movable joints in the body outside of the spine. These joints include the ribs, shoulder and elbow, wrist and hand, hip, knee, ankle and foot, as well as the hands and toes.
Dr. Carmelo F. Caratozzolo (also known as Dr. C) is a certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP) and a Certified Chiropractic Extremity Practitioner (CCEP). Dr. C says, “It is essential to look to the spine first for Subluxations when dealing with any and all issues including the extremities. The reason being is that spinal nerves between the central nervous system and the body are like a circuit breaker in your house. It is essential that the circuit breaker is allowing for communication to the body while looking directly where the symptoms may be as well”.
Dr. C observes that extremities can have fixations too, which cause joint motion restrictions. He has found that these problems may be chronic or acute. Dr. C has noted that people who played sports in their youth have had trauma directly or indirectly to an extremity. In many cases the symptoms go away within a short time after the trauma, but the fixation to the joint or Subluxation to the spine was not resolved. This can lead to a degenerative process which can and often show up years later. Luckily, in most cases these problems can be resolved due to the remarkable regenerative process that is inborn to all of us. Dr. C states, “We see the true healing potential inside us when interference is removed”.
What are the signs or possible symptoms of an extremity issue?
Pain in the extremity and/or spinal region to extremity.
Noticeable weakness in that joint
Extremity stiffness or immobility
Tingling or numbness in an extremity
Joints that click or randomly seem to “lock up”
Similar to adjusting the spine , the goal for adjusting an extremity is to restore proper alignment and motion of the joint. Doing so allows the joints to have normal and proper function insures efficient movement, proper aging and minimizes wear and tear.
