Joint Health 101 (Giveaway)

Posted Oct 12 2010 4:22am

This past week, I added a new supplement to my daily routine called NatureMade TripleFlex . NatureMade contacted me and asked if I would be interested in trying a one-month supply since they recently re-launched it to its original formula. It is good for long-term joint health and flexibility so I figured I’d give it a try.

Back in its original formula, Nature Made TripleFlex Triple Strength is full of all the joint-healthy essentials that promote overall long-term joint health and comfort. With glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM, this formula provides daily joint maintenance that really works.

Glucosamine

Glucosamine is an amino acid and a natural compound made by your body. It is one of the building blocks for cartilage, the connective tissue cushioning your joints. It works by maintaining structural integrity you need in your joint cavity and prevents your cartilage from wearing down over time.

Chondroitin

Chondroitin is a highly charged molecule found in your cartilage. It exists mainly as a complex with proteins. Chondroitin keeps your joints moving smoothly by absorbing and holding water. This provides an additional cushion for your joints as you move. It also protects cartilage breakdown by working together with MSM.

MSM

MSM stands for methylsulfonylmethane (METH-əl-sul-FON-il-METH-ane). It provides the sulfur your body needs so chondroitin can work to protect your cartilage from wear. MSM also plays a major role in joint flexibility and smooth function.

Besides taking this supplement, there are some other great ways to promote long-term joint health.

Omega 3′s

  • -Salmon, sardines and herring
  • -Green vegetables
  • -Nuts, seeds and whole grains

Antioxidants

  • Vitamin A -Beta carotene and carotenoids – Yellow-orange fruits and vegetables such as apricots, carrots, cantaloupe and peaches, as well as dark leafy vegetables such as spinach and parsley
  • Vitamin C -Fruits such as grapefruit, papaya, oranges, mangoes, raspberries, pineapples and tomatoes, as well as vegetables such as asparagus, red peppers and broccoli
  • Vitamin E -Avocados, whole-grain breads and cereals, sunflower seeds and peanut butter
  • Selenium -Salmon, Brazil nuts, oatmeal and brown rice

Stretch
Most people think that stretching is a good idea before or after exercise, but it’s the healthy choice for your joints anytime. Daily stretching is crucial for helping to keep joints mobile and flexible. Try taking “flex” breaks throughout the day to help keep your muscles and ligaments flexible and strong.

Start Moving
Moving your body is the best way to stay flexible. Exercise protects joints by strengthening the muscles around them. Strong muscles keep your joints from rubbing against one another, wearing down cartilage. Low-impact activities, like walking, are easy on your joints and still great for keeping your muscles strong. Walking can reduce joint pain and stiffness, too. It also helps build muscles around the joints while helping you increase your flexibility and endurance.

Be Prepared
Before you start exercising, make sure you have the right equipment. The right pair of shoes for good support and comfortable exercise clothing are just as important as your workout. They’ll prevent injury and make it easier for you to start your new routine. A pedometer is also a great way to track your walking progress and keep you motivated, too.

I think these are all great tips. I know some people hate stretching (I used to be one of them) but it really is so important for long-term joint health. I am happy to see that avocado, whole grains, oatmeal, and broccoli are on the list of foods to eat since I eat them almost every day! I’ve been taking this supplement twice a day so we’ll see if I notice any changes. I probably won’t since it is for long-term joint health but I will keep you updated!
